Pre-race routine:

Woke up boys to go with me and McFuzz. Austin was racing as well. Grabbed a couple pieces of toast on the way out the door. Stopped at Mickey D's for a cup of coffee. Talked to friends before race.
Event warmup:

Jogged to starting line.
Run
  • 35m 42s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 11m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

Thought I did a pretty good job on this course. Wanted to beat the demons from last year.
What would you do differently?:

Hydrate the day before. Not have pizza for dinner the night before. Train on hills more than once every 3 months.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked through mister they had set-up. Caught up with McFuzz and kids (Austin came through W-A-Y before me)and a friend. Voted for best aid station (I voted for the band). Got in line for gatorade (didn't take any), water (took 2 bottles), skipped the pizza (see above), grabbed melon, banana, orange and skipped the winkies.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not enough training on hills. Pizza the night beofre!

Event comments:

This is a good race. They have various student associations running the water/aid stations. The racers get to vote on their favorite station and the one with the most votes gets $500, 2nd gets $250 and 3rd gets $100. This one of the few races in the area (5Ks) that are mostly hills.

My goal was to beat my time from last year. I ran in something horrible like 45 minutes (actually 40:42). It was ungodly HOT (~95 at 7 am with matching humidity and I had not trained enough or given enough thought to the hills in that area. This year I was better prepared but still havelots of work to do. It was still humid this morning but at least it wasn't unbearably hot! I've got to figure hot how to run these races without walking. I can run entire races when they are flat routes but when there are more than 2 hills (not little bumps) I have a hard time sustaining my mental toughness to finish the race on a strong note. This is one that I want to keep doing in order to get my speed to where I think it should be.

Good race. I love hills, they give me small goals to focus on during a race. Otherwise, it is just push hard for 5 k. I much prefer to think about pushing up a hill (30 seconds) then slacking on the downhill, then preparing for another hill. That is just me.

You crushed your last-year's time. Improvement is sweet!

Congrats.  Way to improve over last years time.

Hill training is a great way to improve your overall times even for flat races.  Ask McFuzz if he racalls the hill training we did in high school.  If not I'll see if I can help him.

Way to go BAMBAM66!!

Hills suck, but I shouldn't complain...most of the routes I run in training are hills. /
