Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 3:40, had tea, granola bar and peach. Headed out at 4:20. Ate 1/2 bagel w/pb at ~6am. First time eating a bagel in years (broken rule #1), but couldn't stomach my typical egg sandwich or bran flakes. Wasn't as nervous as anticipated!
Event warmup:

Spent a lot of time in the water. It was so warm! I purchased new goggles (broken rule #2) that are sooo much better than my old ones! The are mirrored lenses, but really just more comfy. My old goggles leaked during my last open water swim practice so I figured how bad could it be to use a new pair?
Met some great people in the water. Met a wave-mate. Swam around a bunch.

Comments:

Even in the pool, I need ~200-300m to get into a groove. Same happened here. I took it easy for the first 3/4 of the swim, could have done much better. I just went into it thinking to relax and glide. After the last buoy, I kicked it up a bit and was disappointed that it was over-had a lot left in me.

What would you do differently?:

nothing since it was my 1st tri. In the future, not be so concerned about conserving energy. Could have sped it up earlier than I did.
Transition 1
  • 04m 5s
Comments:

Went fine. Didn't rush, but didn't take my time. I guess I 'hussled' as much as I could.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing besides practicing transitions.

Comments:

Up until mile 4 (the 3 hills), I passed many and was passed by no one. Then the hills came! At the expo we were told that 80% of the participants walk up the hills. My goal was to not walk it, and somehow, I managed not to walk. The 3rd hill kicked my butt, though. After recovering, I took it easier than I could have. Again, didn't want to overdo it and bonk at the end. Could have picked it up at bit during the last half. Overall, I enjoyed it!
What would you do differently?:

Hill repeats...more of them! I live near some pretty decent ones, so that is what I will be doing.
Transition 2
  • 03m 7s
Comments:

Went fine...nothing special!
Run
  • 30m 23s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 48s  min/mile
Comments:

Yesterday we were told that the race would be a 5k instead of 2.8 due to moving the transition area closer to the water. The race results show me as having a 9:48 mile...am thinking the run was closer to 2.8 because my running was crappy! Heading out, I felt fine. Mile 1-2 I felt horrible. It was HOT and HUMID. When training, I run at 6am when it is still cool and comfy. The last mile I got a second wind and was able to actually run a decent pace until the finish line.
What would you do differently?:

Train more in the heat/humidity.
Post race
Warm down:

I had to get away from the crowd-felt claustrophobic for some reason! Just keep walking, ate a slice of watermelon, stretched a bit

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The only physical thing affecting me was my quads. Last Sunday I played softball and killed them...to the point where yesterday I couldn't lift leg up while putting shoe on. I took it easy during parts of the race when I felt my quads hurting a bit. But I can't say they really limited me because I am very pleased the quads didn't give out on me!

Event comments:

Loved this as a 1st tri...so much so that I just registered for my next one in September, with an ocean swim and longer bike. Can't wait!

Great job to you too! "Relax and glide" was supposed to be my swimming mantra too--didn't work as well for me as it did for you. Here's to lots more races in our futures!
