Overcast
Total Time = 2h 39m 56s
Overall Rank = 35/150
Age Group = M 20-24
Age Group Rank = 2/5
Pre-race routine:

Up early, banana, and whole wheat bagel with peanut butter, lots of water.
Event warmup:

Set up transition, light jogging.
Swim
  • 43m 47s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 55s / 100 meters
Comments:

Terrible swim, just couldnt get into a rhythm. Got stung by a jellyfish twice and had to deal with foggy goggles. The course could have used some more buoys.
What would you do differently?:

More time in the pool and open water. Not get stung by jellyfish.
Transition 1
  • 01m 22s
Comments:

Pretty average T1, nothing special.
What would you do differently?:

Be smoother and faster
Bike
  • 1h 14m 45s
  • 24 miles
  • 19.26 mile/hr
Comments:

Decent bike leg, would have liked to push the pace but my legs still felt a little flat.
What would you do differently?:

More time in the saddle and technique work.
Transition 2
  • 00m 37s
Comments:

Dismount was great and got into the transition area quickly. Overshot my spot by a couple bikes.
What would you do differently?:

A little more work on being smoothe.
Run
  • 39m 27s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 06m 21s  min/mile
Comments:

Good pace, ran myself up a few spots and ran into 2nd place in the age group. Legs got going and felt good, was able to push a decent pace. Lack of experience at this distance made pacing interesting.
What would you do differently?:

More speed work.
Post race
Warm down:

Light jogging and stretching, then walking to course to jockstrap for some friends.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of knowledge and experience at this race distance, and bad weeks leading up to the race.

Event comments:

Good volunteers and post race. Transition rack mates were less than nice. I came back to my bike before swim start and found my bike moved and the brake lever moved over a bit (thankfully it was easily fixed). Also, my aerodrink was empty, luckily i had an extra bottle. I'm not sure I'll do this race again next year, but it wasnt terrible.

Hey there!!!

Fantastic display on how to handle unexpected situations thrown at you!!   You can officially say 'Ah it was just a little jellyfish'  in your next race Tongue out  Trust me.. I had a 'field' day in my Gulf Coast race.  I even have a pic of my said jellyfish encounter in my albums.  .  .

Rest up!!! Laughing

Matt:

Awesome race! Congrats on the 2nd place AG hardware.  Thanks for the jockstrapping, it really helped.  I'm with you about doing (not doing) the race next year.  Nice job.
