Pre-race routine:

Drove down Friday afternoon and checked in to a hotel after checking out the course. Woke up at 5am, showered, packed, loaded the car, and drove across the street to Waffle House for breakfest. Driving down early was a great decision. Usually on race day, I'm up at 3 am, gulping down a bagel or two, and driving a couple of hours, only to arrive just before the start. From now on, if the drive is over an hour and a half, I drive down the night prior (I just hope I remember that next time. ha..ha..)
Event warmup:

Arrived an hour and a half early, took my time setting up transition (for a change), then ran the trail portion of the run course, came back and rode for about 20 minutes. Got back and rechecked the transition area just in time for the rain and thunder. damn!

Comments:

Since the Tri was changed to a DU the start seemed very crowded with the addition of the 1st Tri wave. I started up front, but on the outside. It took several minutes to work my way back to the inside. This is the first time I paced an entire run using a heart monitor. tried to maintain HR between 150 and 155. I managed to maintain that HR the whole time except for a spike at the start and the big hill.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing?
Transition 1
  • 01m 9s
Comments:

I decided that I would put on shoes and run through the transition area. This was slower but safer for me since the number races in the transition area at the same time probably tripled.

Comments:

After the transition I came out hammering it pretty hard. I felt good. Comming in to the first turn I completly forgot about the wet roads and my rear tire slightly skidded, not much, but enough to make me slow way down. I figured, a 20 mph average doesn't mean sh*t if you crash. Been there, done that. So I turned it down. This was a pretty good decision since there were a few minor wrecks and one major crash. Overall slower than I capable of but I'm ok with it.

Transition 2

Comments:

Best T2 so far. Popped a Jel and grabbed a cup of water.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run

Comments:

Started of good but immediately felt cramps developing in both calves. WTF. I have never had muscle cramps at any time in my life until this year. Now I seem to have them all the time. I guess it's the age factor creeping in. So I slowed down, and even walked for a few seconds. Once the jel kicked in I picked the pace back up. Alittle slow but I'm ok with it.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed a water, and waited at the finish line. Watched Leslie and a few others that started in the later waves come in. Ate several bagel pieces, a couple bananas.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing to blame anything on. It's all me.

Event comments:

Overall it was a fun race despite the poor weather. I will remember to bring some extra chow with me for those rain delays! Damn I was hungry. It seemed everyone took it in stride and seemed to have a good time. I had an awesome time chatting and hanging out.
Congrats to NAMSCers Sara, and Leslie for bringing home medals!

I totally agree with you -- better be safe than sorry during wet dangerous race conditions.

Cheers!!
