Subject: which heart rate monitor do you use?
i've been wanting to get a heart rate monitor for a few months now, i just don't know which one! i was wondering if i could get feedback on the types (brands) used and how you like them (or don't). i love the style of the nike one as they seem to be the only company making one that fits a small wrist. however, a friend of mine said that while she is on the bike because of the hand/wrist angle, she keeps shutting off the timer, (hers is not the heart rate one..but i think its the same style).

thanks!

you can probably fiund specific reviews in the gear section. i have two timex models and have been happy with both. the first didn't record any data other than time spent and it was also HUGE on my wrist (men's model), so i upgraded to a smaller version with a few more fuctions (high, low, average, etc). i've been very happy with it.

Hi Nikki -first off - welcome to bt

Polar: solid reputation, comfortable chest strap, , easy to read watch (though the new one is scary huge), pretty clear instructions, water proof watch, lots of choices  - I have had no problems with it at all.  Alot of people seem to like the Timex ones as well.

I used the polar m32 for about a year - and just switched to the polar s625x.  There are also some good threads (in both triathlon talk and in the product reviews area) that discuss hrm  - just use the search button on top.

It really depends what you want to gain from it and what other tools you already have - i chose to get a new one because mine didn't have pace or distance, and I wanted to get the cadence for my bike. I also wanted to be able to download to my computer and ....   the list goes on!  I don't regret buying the intial one (especially since it is now going to a new home where it will be loved!) - I just didn't realize how much I would come to love both the training and biomechanics of it all.

started with a nike hrm....UI (user interface) was great but the functions itself were sporadic at best.

now use a Polar and love it....comfortable chest strap, nice UI, consistent functioning.....

i hear a lot about the timex body link system and good things there too...

Old school...

periodically stopping, using a stop watch, and checking pulse with two fingers.

i recently got the Polar M62. It has a two user function so my husband can use it for his training too (and you don't have to change the settings). It has several training zones, stores exercise info from your last work out and gives info on various aspects of your work out. I'm rapt with it. I decided which functions I wanted by reading up on a polar website and then choosing the monitor that was most closely aligned with what I wanted (and with my bank balance too!!)

Love my Polar S720i, on top of the HRM features, it is a bike computer and altimeter. The 625x looks to be good also, adding distance and speed measurement to your running...

thanks everyone...decisions decisions.

maybe i'll let ebay decide...i think i have it boiled down to either the timex (bodylink) or the polar (either 625 or 720). it looks like the 720 is geared more towards the bike and the 625 more toward the run with options for the bike.

decisions decisions....

you can get the 625x and order the speed and cadence sensor (for another 70 bucks, tho)
i love the 625x.....every time i use it, I learn something new.

i haven't even priced any of them out yet...egad, i know i'll be in for a rude awakening.

thats one of the drawbacks to being divorced, i can't ask the hubby for a xmas present!!

i did the tufts 10K yesterday and definetly felt curious about what it would be like to train with a HRM.

Look on the bright side of things, you don't have to ask permission to buy what you NEED. Plus more time for training! You could always get a low end one to see...

yes, you are right indeed matt. there are many perks to being divorced!! i get every other weekend to myself. kind of makes you appreciate the ones with the kids that much more.

i'm not so sure on more time for training. schedules get tight with kids sports, schoolwork, and my work. with a partner around i think it would lighten the load. but one doesn't work so hard to get divorced to screw it up rashly with making a bad decision AGAIN!!

yep...putting things in perspective. let's see...super nice HRM with bad marriage or cheaper HRM and happy soul. okay, got it. ;-)

Hehe, I wish I was half as fast as Matt...

Yeah, I miss my daughter a lot when she is not around. It is really nice to have time every other weekend to train for hours on end without feeling bad about it or getting in trouble... My partner certainly didn't lighten the load and now I can be selfish and do what I love to. There is no way I would be able to enjoy next week in Hawaii knowing that I would have to do payback for the next 6 months!

This subject is costing me money. After reading it yesterday I did a bit of research.....and then ended up buying a Timex Ironman Triathlon Digital Heart Rate Monitor on sale for $66.99 (allsportwatches.com). Now I guess I can find out if my heart is beating every morning before I head out the door for my workout. I hope you find what you want (need)..I didn't feel like I needed a ton of "bells and whistles".

I've got a Polar S720i with the cadence sensor and infra-red downloading interface coming.  I can't wait to play with it, this'll be my first time training with a HRM.

Oh...and the best part of a great marriage is that the payback is as much fun as being on the receiving end.  After 31 years, I guess we must be doing something right!

I used to feel bad for saying there were "perks" to being divorced. And that being having every other weekend to myself which has allowed me the freedom to really stay active and have some semblance of a social life....but then I realized it's all a matter of balance and a "grass is always greener" mentality.

Sure, those extra weekends are nice, but as Nikki said, having someone to share the load and share all the stuff with would sure be nice too....

But then again, now I don't have to fight him over whether to buy an expensive HRM and trigear or his Harley!

I wanted to buy the Garmin GPS unit, but it didn't have an integrated HRM, so I wound up with the Timex Bodylink System.  Works great and its nice to have all the stuff in one little kit.
