Total Time = 8h 00m
Overall Rank = 300/529
Age Group = Clydesdales
Age Group Rank = 18/29
Pre-race routine:

My alarm went off at 5:30. I ate an uncrustable and drank some Gatorade before I noticed that another clock said 1:30. I went upstairs to check and, sure enough, it was 1:30. NOT the best start to the day. I got up again at 5:30, relaxed a bit, and then drove to the race site.

Event warmup:

Walked around a bit.
Swim
  • 17m 13s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 18s / 100 meters
Comments:

I was in the second wave, right after the elites. I tried to start out a little closer to the front than I had before. About 100 meters into the swim I got kicked in the face. Hard. I was a bit dazed but felt a little better after side-stroking for a minute. My goggles lost their seal on both sides and I couldn't fix them so I swam the rest of the way with water in my googles. I did pass some people in the last 100 meters.

What would you do differently?:

Start at the front and push harder. Swim more.
Transition 1
  • 02m 27s
Comments:

I had some difficulty with my socks and shirt. I really need to get a tri top that fits and to get used to riding/running in bare feet.
What would you do differently?:

Wear a tri-top
Bike
  • 54m 48s
  • 15.5 miles
  • 16.97 mile/hr
Comments:

I made it a few miles before I started to get passed by people but even then there weren't large masses of people passing me like usual. I spent most of the second half of the route chasing down a clyde. I passed him with about a mile to go and smoked him on the run. As I came in a guy said that I was the third clyde off the bike. I was surprised by my time. I really felt that I had been faster.
What would you do differently?:

Go harder.
Transition 2
  • 01m 28s
Comments:

A little better
What would you do differently?:

Not much
Run
  • 28m 18s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 06s  min/mile
Comments:

This is always my most difficult discipline and it was no different today. Right out of transition I was getting passed by a bunch of people. I walked up the tougher hills and "ran" the rest. The results were surprising in a good way. I beat my previous best sprint run time by over 2 minutes. I guess I should have gone harder on the bike...
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around with the family

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Issues with transition. Lack of training.

Event comments:

I was very happy with this race overall. I did a much better job than normal with hydration and my results were good. The race was very well put on and my family had a great time.

Great race!  Tough luck with your goggle issues... I know where you are coming from.  I had the same problem at Lake Anna this spring.  Glad that I got to meet you.

Congrats on a great race! I'm glad you saw some improvements over your other sprints and are happy with your performance. You've worked really hard this year on the bike and run, and it's beginning to, and will continue to, pay off.

Way to go, Felix!!  Sucks about the goggles; been there and water inside is never fun.  Overall, though, it sounds like you had a great race!!

AWESOME race!! I think the vacation taper this past week helped you with fresh legs, your splits look great! I agree that you can save some time in transition with a tri top and no socks for the bike, but that's a good learning to take away from this race. Great job - I'm envious of your run time. Congrats on an awesome race!!

Great race.  Tough course to post a personal best on for sure!  At least you didn't have the women age groupers molest you on the swim.  Not that I am complaining or anything

Felix, great job! I love your "slow" run times of 9:06. I should hire you as a trainer so I can actually break 10 min./mile in a tri!

Congrats.  I want to know if you ever thought you would consider low 9's (with walking) as an OK run.  You did an awesome job!!!

Way to go , Felix! I liked the part about the alarm clock because that sounds exactly like something that I would do. Your splits are great, I wish I could do 9 m/m in a race too! So glad your family got to see you, I'm sure they're very proud. Great job, you've come a long way!

Great race.  You have really improved, particularly on the run.  I remember Emerald Pointe a year ago when you a bit slower.

That was pretty funny about the alarm clock.

David, you will be happy to know that Felix has the official ok to look for a bike now.  Actually, I think he said "WOMAN!, I am tired of being diplomatic and nice. I AM getting my bike now!"  Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahhahahahahahahahahahha!

I fell better now.

All teasing aside, Felix you have made tremendous strides on the bike, and everything else for that matter.  You deserve your new bike, and it WILL make you go even faster!  We are ALL happy for you about the bike.

Great job, Felix!

Too funny about the alarm clock... I have done that before (got up, ate breakfast, sat in my driveway with my bike waiting for a friend to come pick me up to ride... wondering why it was still so dak out!).

It's always nice to see improvement... just proof positive that you have made great strides in your training.  Congratulations.
