Age Group Rank = 1/7
Pre-race routine:

Breakfast: Banana, bagel, powerbar, 24 oz. gatorade
Event warmup:

Light jogging, stretching
Run
  • 19m 21s
  • 5 kms
  • 03m 52s  min/km
Comments:

Ran well, but felt pretty poor. First run was a challenge.
Transition 1
  • 00m 57s
Comments:

Very slow getting going in the transition. Almost 1 minute in transition.
Bike
  • 1h 09m 6s
  • 40 kms
  • 34.73 km/hr
Comments:

Back half of the loop was very fast with slight downhill. Averaged 25-30 mph on this section until hitting the headwind. Last mile of each loop was uphill. First 3 loops, rode the hills pretty well. Last lap was a little tired and slowed to 16-17 mph on the hill.
Transition 2
  • 00m 58s
Comments:

Struggled in transition, bike from the short race was in my spot and had to be moved. Calves started cramping as I was changing shoes. Tried to get my long sleeve jersey off for the run, but the zipper got stuck and I wasted too much time trying to fix it and had to leave it on. Ended up being quite warm in the final run.
Run
  • 43m 9s
  • 10 kms
  • 04m 19s  min/km
Comments:

First mile was cramping a bit in calves and right hamstring. Thought the whole run was going to be a struggle. Once I hit the 1 mile mark, I got the kinks worked out and was running fairly well. Final 1.5 miles was running out of gas and my paced slowed a bit. With no one pushing me from behind, I didn't push myself overly hard over the final 1.5 miles.
Post race
Warm down:

A lot of walking with some stretching. Ate a bunch of food and drank 48 oz. water and some gatorade.

Course: 10K closed loop - 4 laps Rolling course, no large hills; fairly strong headwind the last 2-3 miles of each lap. How could I forget the squirrel? This little guy must have had a death wish. I was on my last loop and feeling pretty good about the bike when I saw a squirrel smack dab in the middle of the road, right in my path. I keep going thinking the little %$#@ will move. At the last moment, I had to swerve to avoid the thing. For a moment I thought the race would be over for me with a spectacular bike/squirrel crash at the 20 mile mark.

Great race Andrew!

That darn squirrel - they're certainly not timid creatures are they??  Would have made interesting press the next day though!

How do find doing 4 loops on the bike? I vacilate between feeling like "ok, at least  I know what to expect" and " not again!" when I see mulit-loop courses.  Do you prefer r/b/r to the s/b/r courses?  Neat name for the event.

Thanks! I actually liked the 4 loops. The first loop helped get a feel for the course and allowed for a little more aggressive riding the remaining loops. I didn't have a chance to ride the course prior to the race so this was helpful. As far as prefering r/b/r or s/b/r... I have only competed in duathlons so far so I can't say. My goal for the winter is to work on my swimming and enter a few tris next year.

Hey - another Michigander! I knew I recognized that event name.

Those are some damn fast splits. I'm envious.

Yeah. Work on that swimming. Hope to see you on the Michigan circuit next season. Many of us out there...you'd do very well, I think.
