Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 3:45am ate breakfast...a pbj, bagel, banana coffee and water gatoraide..
Event warmup:

walked 2 miles to transition from hotel then walke 1.2 miles to swim start.... did some light swimming in lake once i got to the start...
  • 36m 8s
  • 2112 meters
  • 01m 42s / 100 meters

got a little off course on the start of swim... once on course felt pretty good.. at the end of swim heading in hit a sand bar a 100 yards or so prior to finish, got up started running and undid my wet suit...oops water got deep again and had to swim with top of suit dragging.
What would you do differently?:

wait until i am on the beach before any wet suit removal.
Transition 1
  • 04m 47s

for me this was a rather good and smooth transition.
What would you do differently?:

did everything how i planned, just try to execute is faster, but happy with it.
  • 2h 42m 17s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.70 mile/hr

felt great on the bike. keep up a good continuous pace and legs felt good when i was finished. maybe could have gone a little hard, but didnt want to kill myself...feeling great with the run my strength coming up....sub 5 her i come.........
What would you do differently?:

Transition 2
  • 03m 45s

everything went very smooth...
What would you do differently?:

  • 2h 18m 42s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 35s  min/mile

well this is where the wheels came off.. my strongest leg of the event turned out to be a mess. my goal sub 7:30 pace for the run with first mile being around 7:45 to get loose. mile one was 7:15, feeling great. first aid station drank a little water and a little gatoraide... .25 miles later vomitting on side of road. walked the next quarter. started to feel better. started running again and about .5 mile nausea returned. this battle went on the rest of the race. a lot of walking so instead of a 1:35ish half i ran(walked) a 2:18.
What would you do differently?:

not sure... i took in plenty of nutrition on the bike so not sure what went wrong with the run, was not too hot so it was not a heat factor. back to drawing board with my nutrition.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

nausea on the run..

Event comments:

Sorry to hear about your bad run experience, but it sounds like you have a pretty good attitude about it. You had a great swim and bike and a great overall time in my opinion. No matter what, you still finished a half-ironman triathlon... no small feat! Congrats!

That must of been painful on the run.  Nice job finishing though... and beating my best effort by 2 minutes.
