Pre-race routine:

Left work, changed and set-up transition
Event warmup:

Did a little biking to make sure the gears were working. Did a littlw swimming to see if I wanted to go without the wetsuit. I am glad that I did because my new goggles keep leaking so I went back to my old ones. Did a little running and stretching...then stood in the water for 20 min so all the warming up was for not
Swim
  • 09m 26s
  • 400 yards
  • 02m 22s / 100 yards
Comments:

Includes my T1 time as I did not look at my watch when I got out of the water.

This was my first crowded traithlon swim without a wetsuit. I realize now that I made one huge tactical mistake. I started over to the right but I should have started out front and swam hard to get a little separation. Instead, I hesitated a bit and two guys jumped right in front of me and I literally had to stand for a few seconds to have any water to get into. After that it was just a complete cluster you know what to the first buoy. I anytime I swam at all, I would just ram into the back of someone. There was no place to go as I was completely covered by people. It had to be my my slowest swim ever to the 1st buoy. Of course, without the wetsuit, every time I got cracked, my legs went straight to the bottom and I had to restart. Once I got near the buoy, I had a little space so I dove to the outside and went wide around the buoy. Finally I had a little space to swim and actually had a nice swim in...was actually passing people which never happens. When I finally got out of the water, Cappy told me I was 3 min down on Baity. I was not surprised but a little dissapointed as I knew there was no way I was making up 3 min.
What would you do differently?:

Start out much faster and get some clean water.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

T1 was not that much faster even though I did have the wetsuit. I bet it only saved 10-15 seconds.
Bike
  • 30m 5s
  • 11.5 miles
  • 22.94 mile/hr
Comments:

I had a lot more people to pass than normal was able to get by about 30 before hitting the first hill and then had some open space (I didn't all of my ranting in my blog so I won't repeat it here). Like 2 weeks ago, I spun up the hills as fast as I could , trying to keep my calves from cramping up. Didn't feel as strong as two weeks but still was okay. Usually when I turn onto JOnes Hollow, I make up my most amount of time. On the first lap and I didn't feel quite right so I just backed off a little but to settle down and then picked up the pace again. I was 20 seconds slower than last week and it probably was related to this stretch.

Came through lap 1 and Cappy told me I was now 2 min down on Baity. Lap 2 was pretty uneventful and was felling really good. Was still passing a lot of people which is really motivating. Never caught Baity, which I new I wouldn't, but I would have liked to start the run with him again.

Coming down main street a little before the turn, I took my feet out of my shoes ( I am getting good at this) and rolled into T2.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, had a nice ride.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Good transition. I have been riding without socks but can't run like that yet so I have to put on socks in T2.
Run
  • 19m 49s
  • 3.2 miles
  • 06m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

So I started running and was having flasbacks to 2 weeks ago when I just had nothing. Not the case this week, I had good legs, yeah. I couldn't be happier with this run. Rather than just surviving the course, I was able to push the pace and took a min off of the last race. I passed a bunch of people but there as a pack about 30-45 seconds in front of me coming down main street that I was trying to real in. However, I just ran out of steam and made little progress. In the end, I was happy to see my time was about the same as two weeks ago but with a much slower swim.
Post race
Warm down:

Tried to not keel over dead.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just keep swimming, just keep swimming

Event comments:

Another fun Lake T race. Had a great night trying to chase down Billy and Dan. For me, it makes no difference whether I beat them or not, it is about trying to beat them and pushing myself harder than I otherwise would.

Mark...great race.

I like your use of other to motivate yourself to push harder.

Amazingly fast bike/run pace...interesting how swim can be effected so much by where you start and what others do.

Congrats and see you at Cranberry, right?
