mr2tony - 2007-08-10 2:36 PM I'll refrain from posting except to say that blaming the media because you received bad investment advice or bought into the hype isn't going to bring back your nestegg. On that note, I'm out of my `hype-producing office' onto an airplace to head back home. See you all Monday when I can cause everybody to lose their money by forcing them to make bad decisions and not have the wherewithal to give their investments due investigations before making them!!!

Case in point.... I think part of the problem with the media is either they don't realize the power they have over the average American sheep, or they don't care.

Ultimately, yes, people are responsible for their own decisions. But it is debatable whether or not the mass media helps or hinders the decision-making process.

Completely off the original topic, but here's the thing...  I'm not going to take medical advice from a newspaper.  Nor am I going to take investment advice from one.  If I want an expert, I'll find one.  Now, if the experts are purposefully misleading people that's a criminal act.

My beef is not with media advice.  It is with the media’s tactic of fear as an attention getter.  The market drops a couple of hundred points and the headlines read like “the sky is falling.”  They know their readers/viewers eat this up.

True.  Of course, they use it because it works.  People don't want to hear that this is normal, or to be expected.  I think that the true blame still lies with the readership for buying into the fear with little or no knowledge of what they are being told.  Ignorance is no excuse.

x1,0000,00000,0000,000,0,000,   to all the "sky is falling" media haters (yes, I know that's not a real number......)  Global this, global that.  A pox on then all.

As to the OP, nope.  I'm a buy and hold type of guy.  Buy some good investments (actually, have an expert investment adviser tell us what and when to buy), sit on them and let them compound.  I am certainly not smart enough to match the market, I'm not even gonna try.

My 401K, akthough it's dipped a bit in the last 2 months, is still 10% + over the last year.

Oh how I wish people would turn off the news at night, or at least filter what they read and watch instead just HAVING to watch or read every ‘sky is falling’ story out there.

I will openly admit that I do not watch the news because the overwhelming majority of it is bad news.

Here, let me sum up almost every news cast tonight and most every night:  There was an accident with injuries or deaths, a house/building burned down, someone was shot, the market dropped, etc.  That then leads to your weather and sports.

The really savy people will have hedged this potential disaster in the options market.  worth spending a little of that premium to put a floor on your downsides.

They're not just for institutions.

Our headlines from today:
U.S. Stocks Drop on Credit Concern; Countrywide, GE Shares Fall
This story gives the fact that it dropped, reasons why it dropped and experts who tell us all why they believe it dropped.

Stock Rout May Prompt Leveraged-Buyout Renegotiations
This story gives the fact that there was a rout and the effect that's having on buyout targets including SLM and First Data.

Countrywide, Washington Mutual Fall on Mortgage Slump
Same as the stocks story -- how much they dropped, why and experts saying so.

Utah Coal-Mine Rescue Effort May Have Missed Target
Uh oh, more negative press. We should write someting positive. Oh wait ...

Bank Stocks, Cheapest for Decade, Attract Investors
Here's a story that says what may be a good investment. There are several more like it.

Welp I don't see any `sky is falling' headlines. But that's my company, and maybe we're just a little better than everybody else. I think the disconnect isn't that we don't KNOW the power we have, we report what is happening.

I don't know any reporters who say `Hey, I know what, let's f**k people out of their hard-earned money by writing a story about this, that and the other.'

Usually it's like `Hmm, wonder why the Dow fell 200 points. Let me call some people in the know and tell the rest of the world.'

Off Topic...mr2tony what do you do for your paper?News agency? This questions will not be relative to this thread, but to the idea of "the Media blowing out of proportion"

Do you get a lot of gripes about sensationalism?

PR machines to help sell papers?

I do not ask to offend, I just hear about this all the time and wonder how someone in the "business" is with that.

I’m more concerned about how the media blows this stuff our of proportion and scares the heck out of the average person and they end up doing stupid stuff out of this anxiety that is shoved down their throats.

x2. I think using terms like "global economic crisis" is making a mountain out of a wee molehill.

I'm not worried. I figure it's mostly self-correction and further fallout from the sub-prime mortgage issue. Personally, all of my stocks are long-term holds, and any other positions are protected. The market will bounce back--maybe not next week, but it will before long.

Today, the thing that really concerns me is the 1-month and 3-month T-bill yields going zero and even negative.

As best I can determine, this means that some big players with tons of cash are so risk-averse to everything in the market right now, that they are willing to take a known small loss on short-term investments rather than any other alternative.

ETA: I think it also means that possible Fed rate cuts won't do a damned thing.

I just can't shake the feeling that we are witnessing historical events this week.

6 more months. Ask me again in 6 months. ETA: I am an eternal optimist so that is where I am coming from. But there are a lot of good companies that didn't buy into the greed. These companies I am hoping we will find are on very sound footing and will be what gets us through this. My main concern is that some that are now seen to be failing I would have put into that sound footing category 6 months ago. As newleaf said last year, I am young and if this can correct itself I will be better for it. If it cannot correct itself, well... 6 months and I think I will know if I am an opportunist or an idiot.

I am only slightly less optomistic than you. I believe we are 18 months away from very good times. I anticipate that the market will have rebounded and the indices (globally) will be up 75 - 80% from today's values.
