This is a tough one. The swim to bike is the most difficult for me, given that when I get out of the water it's a bit of a shock to stand and move quickly on land. Other issues in T1 are whether or not to wear socks, do you clip in the pedals first, and whether or not you have to contend with a wetsuit. T2 is less difficult in terms of procedures, but it feels much more difficult changing from biking to running in such a short amount of time...

S to B, especially if you're peeling off a wetsuit, etc.

thought there transition from swim to bike is tough, as u got to peel off n wear this n that n etc...

i found transition from bike to run is more difficult cos my whole legs got so hard n tensed up from the cycling n its just so hard to run :-(

Definitely swim to bike. I come out of the water half dazed and drunk. It literally takes a few miles on my bike for me to come to my senses.

Does anyone know how to make the disorientation go away faster or how to prevent it?

Here's my proof...

Swim to bike for sure. There's a lot more to remember since you need so much more for biking than for running. T2 is just peel it all off and GO!

Definitely swim to bike. I feel a little disoriented coming out of the water, and trying to put shoes and socks and a top on, all while your feeling light headed is hard.

It seems that most here have a problem with T1, I wonder if it's partly because during the bike portion you can sort of think ahead to T2 and plan things out over the last mile or so, but most of us our so focussed on not drowning, we aren't really thinking ahead to T1.

The swim...I think it's because the caps are on too tight and your brain is smashed. It needs some time to air out on the bike.

MY PROOF...and please don't laugh TOO hard...

Ahhh, I have a better one than that, I forgot how to take my cap off, and decided that pulling on the top of it was the way to go.

I think I sucked half my brain out before I remembered how to remove a swim cap.

I do get disoriented slightly, more just a bit light-headed than really out of it. The bike to run is tougher on me physically, so that's what I voted for.

Definitely the swim to run for many of the same reasons already mentioned. Before my last race I went to a transition clinic/workout with the local tri club which helped a lot by just practicing over and over until it was all more or less second nature - I seem to get into trouble anytime I'm forced to think about things too much...

Most definately the swim to bike transition. Forget the dazed and confused coming out of the water. I hit that 15 feet into the water with my brain asking my body "why are you doing this swim thing AGAIN"?!! Going into T1 I am usually so thankful that I didn't drown, it takes me a minute or two just to bask in the glory. It usually comes to an end with my husband and kids screaming at me to get going that I'm not done yet!! In my book, if I survive the swim, the rest is gravy!!!

LOL! Thanks for the great, honest, replies folks!

It seems an overwhelming number of you find T1 the most difficult. So, other than the clinic RedCorvette went to, any of you doing anything special to practice for T1?

Thanks again,
Rob

I actually practiced taking my wetsuit off as quickly as possible, and then jumping on my bike.  However I find all of my good intentions go all to pieces in the frenzy of the actual T1.  One race I did this year had the transition area on a grassy hill.  I stepped on the leg of my wetsuit, and went splat right on my azz.  Very humiliating. Fortunately I was first one out of the water on my rack, so nobody saw it.  I just stayed sitting and pulled wetsuit rest of the way off.  Another race I couldn't find the zipper pull.  I'm running up the beach, fumbling around for the dang thing.  I was convinced I get back to TA with wetsuit still zipped up.

One of my more memorable T1s was at Bud Light Baltimore back in the 80s.  The Bud Light Series was a high profile event with lots of media coverage.  A news helicopter had been hovering above filming the swim.  I guess it came down kind of low at some point because I get back to the transition area and my stuff has been blown around.  My glasses and helmet were several bikes away.  That was kind of hairy since at the time I wore glasses and was blind as a bat.  I found my stuff, but made for a slower transition.

Another vote for T1.  All the blood is in the upper body when exiting the water and that run to the transition area is not easy, particularly if its over a sandy beach.  Also, there's so much more to remember and do in T1 than in T2.  Then, once on the bike, it seems to take a while to get the blood down into the legs.

Mental conversation during T1: "What am I doing? This is nuts. Bike? I have to ride a bike? Who's that guy getting off his bike? He's going to run now? What am I doing? I have to ride a bike? Are those my shoes? Am I standing up? Poppies....poppies..."

Geez, and here I thought that I was the only one who was dizzy and disoriented after the swim!  I am not alone...weeeeeeeeeeeee.  I think that from now on, I will not bother to put on socks for the bike or run legs...they are so short anyways.  The only problem I have with T2 is that I always forget to take off my gloves and the stuff in my back pockets prior to the run leg, which is no deal anyways.

After struggling with my socks during practice, I ditched them for the race - never missed them, though I did get a small blister on my left heel. I do wear bike gloves because of carpal tunnel syndrome in hands (I've had surgery on the left and will probably need it eventually on the right). Takes a bit of effort at T1 to pull them on, but just toss them in my helmet at T2.

I also feel drunk while exiting the water... I don't know why... I love swimming, but I am VERY disoriented afterwards...

HAD to throw in my T1 photo...I look absolutely scary and miserable, and I just finished my very favorite leg of the race.

At least in that pic you know which way is out of the water. That person out by the buoy looks REALLY confused!
