View Member's Race Log View other race reports
Quakertown, Pennsylvania
United States
80F / 27C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 23m 47s
Overall Rank = 50/439
Age Group = 25-29 Male
Age Group Rank = 3/25
Pre-race routine:

This was not the usual for me. I had driven up to Quakertown the day before to stay with a friend who lives about 10 minutes away from the race site. I had eaten a crappy meal the night before so I was feeling sick when I woke up this morning. I didn't eat and I only drank a bottle of water. Loaded up the jeep and headed to the transition area. Got there at exactly 5am and got the end of the rack for my age group.
Event warmup:

I couldn't get a bike ride in so I did a medium paced jog for about 10 minutes. No swim warm up either because my wave started an hour and 15 minutes after the first wave went off. About two minutes from my wave jumping in the water I found myself standing off to the side of the hillside in some grass. It ended up that I was standing on a ground hive and got stung twice in my ankle so that was an unpleasant start to my race!
Swim
  • 18m 32s
  • 800 meters
  • 02m 19s / 100 meters
Comments:

I have come to face it that my swim is by far the thing I need to work the most at. I did well at the beginning but once I got about 300-400 meters out I started having trouble with my breathing and had to rest a couple times to regain my composure.
What would you do differently?:

Better pace of myself and better training by far!
Transition 1
  • 01m 26s
Comments:

Transition went smoothly. I was thinking it would take 1:30 each transition so I was happy with what I got. (36 overall)
What would you do differently?:

Nada
Bike
  • 39m 54s
  • 12.8 miles
  • 19.25 mile/hr
Comments:

I made up A LOT of spots on the bike. After the climb out of transition I just put the hammer down on the first three miles just flying past people. After the first turn around there were gradual hills to climb coming back. Still coming up them I kept passing people. There were some really difficult hills to climb so I took advantage of every down hill by getting in the hardest gear and just pedaling my ass off. It really paid off and I was extremely happy with my bike performance.
What would you do differently?:

I still need to do more training with hills. That is about it.
Transition 2
  • 00m 50s
Comments:

Couldn't ask for a better transition. Everything flowed nicely and my race belt was still there when I got back from the bike!
What would you do differently?:

Nada.
Run
  • 23m 6s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

I think my run suffered a little bit from the makeup on the bike. This was what I had planned before the race. I wanted to see how fast I could go on the bike and still maintain my run. I'm not disappointed with my run but it sure is slower than my 6:50 min/mile run at belleplain. It was pretty cool though, by the time I came to the finish chute there was no one near me so there were tons of people just cheering for me and it just made me feel good about myself.
What would you do differently?:

Work with pace on the bike and run. I am still not at the point where I know how hard I can go on each discipline. It will just take some time and some exerpience.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around for about 45 minutes until awards were given out. Ate a banana and had some gatorade.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of pacing.

Event comments:

This was the first race I came in top three of my age group. It was a great accomplishment for me and it shows that training is paying off. I never in my wildest dreams would have thought I would I would be getting a podium finish in my first year of triathlon. I love this sport and I love everyone involved in it. Its a great family to be a part of. I am just really happy and I feel great about myself.

Great job today, AJ!

Awesome work pushing it up those hills on the bike. It sounds like fun. And, for racing all out on the bike - on hills! - you still had a strong run. Just work on that swim a little and you'll really be bringing in the hardware!

Good job. SOrry you felt sick this morning, but it obviously didn't affect your race .

AJ - Nice job there my friend hitting the podium. It is a testament to your consistency in training this year. Your bike and run were really solid next year with a bit more work on the swimming I think podiuming will be a regular occurence for you....

Superb job on getting hardware!  Keep pushing that bike and the run will come.  That's been my philosophy this year and it's been working out ok.

Great race.

Congratulations on a great race! Way to tough out getting stung and feeling sick. Gee, if placing is you on a not-so-great day, imagine what can happen when you are tip-top!

Keep at it!

(I raced Steelman too. Beautiful setting.)
