Pre-race routine:

Help volunteer with race, so got to race site about 5:30am. I was on parking duty. I ended my duty about 7am, so had about 1hour to get myself ready for the race, would have loved more time, but more important to me to help out DQ then get ready for the race. I had Scoogie (winner of the race) rack right next to me, so that was a little intimidating. He was a very nice guy we chatted a few minutes before and after the race
Event warmup:

Swim
  • 08m 28s
  • 438 yards
  • 01m 56s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim was muddy, really didn’t bother me at all, I felt smooth out there, but my swim time was much slower then I thought it was going to be, I think I need to start wearing my wetsuit. This year i haven't worn my wetsuit at all and i have noticed my swim times have been slower.

What would you do differently?:

wear the wetsuit when i can

Comments:

Course was 3 loops which i should know very well cause i live on the race course. 1st loop I had a nice ride cause there was little traffic, but I knew loop 2 and 3 would be different. 2nd and 3rd loop I had a lot a riders to get around but everyone was riding to the right so I could pass on the left. At one point I was going back and forth with a guy who kept passing me then I would pass him. I was on my last loop he was on his 2nd, I pulled up next to him and said “thank god I am done with you”.

What would you do differently?:

i guess i could have went a little harder.

Comments:

This is were my race tends to fall apart not in a bad way. I just can’t seem to run that fast after the bike, I do brick work, I run about 4 times a week. I just can’t get myself to run faster after the bike. This run was a little different for me, I did feel I was running strong and I was passing some people and overall I was happy with this run. I think it’s a mental thing with me, I think I need some one on one coaching to help me with this area.

What would you do differently?:

i need to run faster. I just need to let myself go and not hold back. I think i need a training partner/coach who is faster than me and can push me off the bike.
Post race
Warm down:

Hung out with my very soon to be in-laws who saw me race for the first time. I was happy to have them there. After they left I hung out the Team TRIumph, and some old friends. Good race I hope they have it again next year.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

the run.

Nice race John! That was a great run. I did Steelman yesterday and the swim is still my downfall. Anyway, good job.

It was a good race. I liked the setup better this year than last. I finished 4th in my age group. The swim just kills me...I am so darn slow I saw you are a maybe for IM Lake Placid 09. I am hoping to do this as well. Am I crazy?

you aren't crazy at all.... you just need to make sure you have the time and you don't get hurt during training..... otherwise you'll be fine...
