Age Group Rank = 31/78
Pre-race routine:

I woke up at 0630, grabbed a shower and went down to the hotel lobby for breakfast. After a light meal of eggs, cold cuts, cheese, a roll and coffee I went back to my room to double check my gear. At 0800 I packed up my borrowed tribag and headed out to the race which was only a 1/4 mile from the hotel.
Turns out I was way early, I think I was probably the 5th guy in the transition area to set up. After I was done I wandered around the different tents and start line trying to get a feel for what was about to happens since I knew the instuctions were going to be read in German and I'm nowhere near fluent.
Event warmup:

Not much, a quick jog around the transition area to loosen my legs and some stretching.
Swim
  • 26m 55s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 47s / 100 meters
Comments:

I was very happy with my swim. I did much better than I expected. Although getting kicked in the goggles twice was a rude awakening.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing other than get some more swim practice in to work on my form.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

The transitions were not timed. Both T1 and T2 times are incorporated into the bike time.
What would you do differently?:

I took my time in transition because I hadn't practiced them like I should have and wasted a lot of time. I will definately add some transition practice to the workout.
Bike
  • 1h 12m 12s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.65 mile/hr
Comments:

Around mile 23 I had a near collision with a dog and a fellow triathalete who made an unwise decision to try and pass me during a transition from street to bike trail. Long story short..tight turn, dog moved, I swerved, guy passing went into wall I went back on street. We both finished unscathed somehow.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, I went out as hard as I dared considering the course starts off immediately with its hardest hill. I will incorporate a lot more bike time in training.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Transition were not timed seperately.
What would you do differently?:

Practice, practic, practice
Run
  • 41m 29s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 06m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

The run was fine once I got into a rythm. I was still pumped up from the near bike crash and transition so it took almost a mile to find my pace. Once I settled in and got my breathing under control it was great until the last turn. It was an 8 foot or so wide trail with a cone in the middle that was the turn around point. I turned tight and pushed off too hard, my hamstring tightned up real quick, so I backed off the run the last 2 miles to prevent any injury.
What would you do differently?:

Get lace locks for my shoes. It took too long to tie them.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, ate some watermelon and water. Stretched the tight hamstring and drank my recovorite.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not nearly enough swim and bike training. Transitions would have gained another 2-3 minutes I think.
