Total Time = 3h 56m 55s
Overall Rank = 85/147
Age Group = F4049
Age Group Rank = 3/9
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5 a.m. and had yogurt, oatmeal, tea, banana, peach for breakfast. Showered, gathered the stuff, remembered I forgot to check the tires, so quickly did that, then off to set up.
Event warmup:

A little spin on the bike to check all was in order (4km, 10min). Yup.
A little swim in the lake to check the positioning of the buoys. Didn't help.

Comments:

I hate this T course. Because I tended to veer right today, I ended up in the path of on-coming swimmers too many times.

Goggles were leaky, so I had to stop to clear them quite a few times.
What would you do differently?:

A couple open water swims in July probably would have helped - hadn't done any open water swims since the last race on July 1.
Tighten the goggle straps.
Transition 1

Comments:

Couldn't get my wetsuit off. I was spoiled by the wetsuit strippers in Stony Plain, but haven't had problems before. Oh well.
What would you do differently?:

More open water swim practices in July would mean more practice taking off the suit, which would have helped here.

Comments:

Shannon lost her chip, so they don't have a bike split for her. I didn't catch up, so I'll give her the #1 spot in the age category.

Generally a good bike. Passed quite a few people; didn't get passed by too many. Played tag with a couple of guys for a while before they either dropped me or I dropped them.

Worked at some out-of-saddle climbing in a few places to keep my momentum going.

I thought I would have done better than last year, but it seems many people had slower bike splits than last year, so maybe it was the conditions.

An elk was on the road just towards the end of the first loop. I "yoo-hoo-ed" until I got its attention, and then it finally decided to meander off the road. I love this course!
Transition 2
  • 01m 19s
Comments:

Not my best, but not my worst. My running stuff was under some things I didn't take along on the bike (knee warmers, jacket).
What would you do differently?:

Organize my stuff better.
Run
  • 1h 21m 26s
  • 13 kms

Comments:

I worked hard to keep my pace up, walked through the aid stations and up a couple of inclines because my right hip was feeling tight. I entertained myself by counting how many people were ahead of me. It got discouraging when it went past the number of fingers and toes. :)

The guy playing music by the cabins wasn't there this year - I missed him. :(
What would you do differently?:

Count how many people I'm ahead of instead? :)
Post race
Warm down:

Nearly fell over waiting for the volunteer to get my chip off my ankle (stubborn velcro), then walked a little, gathered my gear, and walked back to the room to drop it off, stretched, showered, stretched, nap, stretched, and then went to the lunch.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Two months of intense yard and garage work with not enough tri-specific training to keep me in top form.

Course: Two-loops on hwy 264 from the Waskesiu town site to Birch Bay turn off. First loop also does an extra turn towards the Narrows turn before heading up along the rest of the course. The road has several deep cracks that stole water bottles from quite a few riders. However, the race organizers have them well marked. After pinch-flatting two years ago, I've learned to ensure my tires are at a good pressure, to ride out of my saddle to gently cross the cracks, and to re-seat my bottles in my cages so they won't get lost.

Hey Andrea, was that you that passed me on a Lemond bike. Not sure but it seemed like I was standing still.

Too bad we never got together but maybe QCM. I will be a course marshall so YELL!!! The pre race meal sounds like a great idea.

Congratulations on the race, you did well considering all the work you had to do.
