Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:20, got dresses and loaded the car. Ate 2 waffles with peanut butter on the way out the door. Got to the race early, just the way I like it, no wait for bathroom, body marking, chip pickup, etc. Set up my area and wandered around looking for people. Chatted for a while until it was time to head down to the start.
Event warmup:

Not much, got halfway in the water then stood around talking.
Swim
  • 06m 20s
  • 400 yards
  • 01m 35s / 100 yards
Comments:

Pretty good swim overall. I am actually surprised about my time- I felt like most of the swim was crowded and that I wasn't going too fast. Started off kinda 'messy' because we were able to run for 10-15 feet before actually starting the swim. I dove in a bit early while others were still running. I think it's kinda hard to run in the water, so I figure that diving in might work better. Swim stayed pretty crowded until the last bouy, but I just kept very close to the bouy and tried to pick off people one by one. I had a nice pace with a girl I used to swim with and I just tried to hang with her. Finished off with the quick jog up to T-area.
What would you do differently?:

Not too much. I realized that I should be starting at the very front of my wave and that's worked well. I need to just remember to push as hard as possible on the swim to take advantage of being a strong swimmer.
Transition 1
  • 01m 17s
Comments:

Good T1 time, I think this is my second fastest T1 so far. I was smack dab in the middle of the transition area, on the outside edge too. Good thing there was a huge tree and a balloon right by me! Need to always be focusing on transitions since you can loose a lot with a slower time.
What would you do differently?:

Not too much. Might try training some without socks to cut down my time, might not.
Bike
  • 40m 18s
  • 13 miles
  • 19.35 mile/hr
Comments:

This was the best bike in a race so far. It felt great! I was only passed by 3-4 women with only one in my AG. It was awesome! I don't remember this course being so fast, but I felt like I was flying...getting 21+ mph at some points. I tried to stay in aero most of the time except for some of the uphills. One frustration was that many women were riding 2-3 wide and it was hard to pass, luckily everyone moved over pretty quickly with and 'on your left'.
What would you do differently?:

Not too much, I'd love to repeat this performance soon!
Transition 2
  • 00m 52s
Comments:

First one back on my rack! Then a nice fast T2. I've tried to spend the last bit of the bike going through my transition in my head. I think it helped!
What would you do differently?:

Not too much...
Run
  • 28m 44s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

This is my weakest part of tri's for sure- and this course wasn't easy for me. It seemed like there was always a little hill in front of me. My goal was to keep running and not get discouraged mentally. I did pass some people in older AG's, but got passed by several girls in my AG. Not good! It's easy for me to say that I could have run faster, but I do think I was giving it pretty close to my best. Plus, my time was a PR or close to one, so I won't complain.
What would you do differently?:

Continue working on my run. It's what I need to improve by 3:00-5:00 to be AG competitive. It's promising b/c I feel I've made improvements in the past 12 months, I think it's just going to be a slow process. I figure is a good challenge to have!
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed water, my shirt and watched people finish. Looked for Kraig forever, but he was still on the run course. Got a quick massage at the PT Solutions tent before leaving.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Overall, not much. I could have gotten more sleep, but I don't think it affected me too bad.

Event comments:

Good race and I'll do it every year if it works on my schedule. You can't beat having a short 20 min drive to a race.

Wow, your swim and bike were awesome! That run will come - seems like the more miles on the feet, the faster they go!

Great job out there, Courtney! I agree, the bike course felt much faster this year! You did awesome and I think with more running miles, by the time it comes to running a 5k, you'll be flying without even realizing it. Even if you're super speedy, I look forward to racing with you again soon!

You had an awesome race - I'm glad I'm not in your AG yet! All your splits look great - you have improved so much on the run this year, I know you're going to get down to where you want if you keep up your run training. Your transitions are very speedy too, did you do your flying dismount? Congrats again on an awesome race!

Great race courtney! You are really getting fast. Those swim and bike splits were amazing, and the run is getting strong very quickly. By next season we may be seeing you on the podium!

Smokin' fast swim (of course) and an even more impressive 20mph average on the bike!

Congrats on a great race!

Tremendous race this weekend.  You were really moving in the water and on the bike.  Regarding the run--remember that you are focusing on distance right now so you haven't been doing speed work.  Your times will keep coming down!

Great race and RR, Courtney.  Really sweet bike segment - that's awesome.  Every time I've ridden with you you've looked strong, so it's safe to safe you're moving in the right direction...20mph avg for a race is probably not too far off.  Keep up the great work!
