How may people out there would participate in aquabike races if they were readily available? I've been looking everywhere for them and it's like they barely exist...what about the world of us that want to work out but have bad knees? So, how many of you would do them on a regular basis? Maybe I'll just have to start them up in Colorado and hope they filter into the other states.

Let me know!

Probably would not do them now because my knees still kind of work but maybe later in life.  I don' t know where you live but there is a long course race on September 9th in Dallas texas.  Check out www.ironheadrp.com - and look for Praireman.  Your other option is to do relays or simply DNF.  I would hate to go into a race knowing you are not going to finish but it is an option.

I know my wife would.  She can't run.  Horrible knees.  But she can swim like a fish and would love to bike.

I've seen several triathlons this summer that offered an aquabike option, including a HIM distance race that I did back in May.  I'm guessing that there are more aquabike events offered as part of triathlons than as stand alone events, at least from my limited exposure.  It was great for me, due to coming off of a hamstring injury and wasn't up to the run.

I would do them more.. but I have a hard time paying the same HIM entry fee as someone who is doing all 3 events.

I won't be doing the run course, but I have to pay for it? No thanks.

I did a 1/2 ironman auqabike in July - I loved it!  I wasn't ready to tackle the full blown 1/2 ironman, but I was very pleased with how I did in that race (minus the 13 mile run).

Amen!  I would love to find more of this type of event.  I do know that the Spirit of Racine Race has an Aqua Bike division its a 1/2 IM

My goal lis to do it in 2009.  I would go for 2008, but my daughter graduates from HS and I learned the hard way this year what having a graduating senior can have an impact on your training.

I live in Nebraska and it's almost impossible to find this type of race -

I would like to do the aquabike portion of an HIM. The Olympic distance has always been my goal. If it's good enough for the stinkin' Olympics, it's good enough for me. "...and then you top it off with a half-marathon," has never had allure, especially since developing a foot injury training for a 15.5 mile race a couple years back. There is a race like that near here, but I had a wedding to go to that day this year. Maybe next?

P.S. I must admit that HIM thoughts have crept into my mind after doing my first Oly.

Around here I've only seen aquabike at 3 HIMs nothing shorter which doesn't help folks with running issues get started in tri to have to do HIM as their first event.

In tri magazines I've on occasion seen aquabike in shorter than HIM events, but rarely.

Kathy - Lobsterman in Maine has an aquabike, and I think there was another one up in the Maine area earlier this year.  Not sure if that counts as close, but they are out there.

I would like to see aquabike included in USAT national rankings - they are doing an aquathlon category this year, so I don't think aquabike will be too far behind.  I'm probably one of those people who eventually won't be able to run due to biomechanical issues, and I am not a fan of relays, so I would love to see this event take off.  And I agree that they should give the event a different price than the full event.

Many of the aquabikes that I see don't have a "finish". Most you just finish the bike and find an official to give back your chip.

I don't think they will be serious until they are treated more like a race with an actual finish line.

That's exactly what I mean...why aren't they treated seriously. Why is it, at a triathlon, they offer duathlons (bike, run, or run, bike, run) but the swim-bike is compeltely ignored. I mean, I don't want to enter triathlons just to quit after the first two events (to be honest, that's just something I can handle doing). So, maybe I'll do it, I'll start the aquabike frenzy. Also, so taht the aquabike races that exist aren't only HIM or IM lengths! I'll get on it! Let's start the next wave of the generation...I mean I bet there was a lot of time when they start doing just duathlons before they became popular and expected at almost every race!

[ sarc ]

yes, in fact, let's require every triathlon to have the following options:

Triathlon

Relay Triathlon

Swim Only

Bike Only

Run Only

Swim-Bike Only (with relay option)

Swim-Run Only (with relay option)

Bike-Run Only (with relay option)

all of the above in reverse-order

awards three-deep in every AG in each of the above events, plus 4 clyde and athena groupings

separate finish chutes and finisher medals for all of the above

[ / sarc ]

(Sorry newbie - not picking on you, but I couldn't resist amusing myself!)

I did an aquabike this year, at Musselman HIM (in upstate NY).  I clearly wasn't trained for the run, and wasn't willing to risk the injury or DNF. So I did the aquabike.  It was awesome.

That being said, the finish was a little bit of a letdown...Ride into transition, rack your bike, give up your chip, then go get the snacks before the snack venue is really 'open'. A little disconcerting, but still just fine by me. I'm not injured. And I placed well among 70 athletes doing the aquabike, a bonus.

I'm in Colorado, and I would so sign up!! I love the swim/bike portion of the race, and do the run as a necessary evil. Not saying I don't love being a triathlete and haven't ever enjoyed a run, but aquabike would be my favorite event. Just my 2 cents.

If you're in Colorado, there's one aquabike option that I found.

I'd do one if you put one on.

Aqua Bikes are not cool.

1) it involves alot of biking.

2) if they had a real aqua bike race the finish would be dangerous.

3) atleast dualthlons have have a x - y - x so you have 2 transistions. the second swim would be too dangerous

4) when you are finishing with the bike and you say hey lets go to your biking buddy and they say sorry I am an aqua bike they make you feel bad.

5) they start behind your wave and kick you all the way to the shore because they do not care they are only an aqua bike

6) they do not have the best part of the tri. The run.

I believe HFP racing, which organizes many events in the Midwest (including Spirit of Racine and the Toyota Challenge events), offers AquaBike options for Sprint, Oly and HIM distances. I doubt if they have special finish lines for them, however.

A local race organizer here has lots of  SwimCycle options at their races, and at distances from sprint to iron distance (minus the run miles of course).  At the end of the cycle you rack your bike and then run a short distance to cross the finish line (the same finish as all the other racers). So you still get  to run across the line and down the finish chute, complete with the finish line photos.

The web site is www.somersault.ca  , but it's in Ontario so pretty far away from  newbie7455.
