A public service annoucement for all of you training in this intense heat for long course triathlons.

Sunday night I was taken to the ER with severe flank pain that turned out to be kidney stones. For those of you who have had them you know the pain I am talking about, for those of you who haven't it is the most intense pain you will ever feel in your life. A CT scan revealed 2 stones in my left kidney, the larger of the two had almost passed leaving the smaller one to get through.

After meeting with my urologist today, he was 99% sure that my stones were caused by severe dehydration during training. We have had some incredibly hot days here recently (100*+) and it  has been a challenge to try and stay hydrated during long training days.

Please learn from my experience and hydrate well before, during, and after workouts. Trust me you DO NOT want to have kidney stones.

Reminds me of a few years ago when Tim Deboom pulled out on the run in Kona as he was passing a kidney stone.  Well, "pulled out" maybe doesn't describe it...more like, "collapsed into an ambulance".  Looked like he was in a serious world of hurt!  Ouch!

I'm guessing you missed a few training days?  Fortunately it happened in our taper period not during the peak training.

I have my own horror story.  Last Wednesday I was bucking hay with my wife and pulled/strained a muscle in my back.  The next day I had to literally roll out of bed becuase I could not stand up.  I missed 3 days of work and have not worked out (anything) for 7 consecutive days now!  My back still hurts but mobility is slowly coming back.

Anyway, kindey stones and back injury certainly were not on our training plans.  See ya'll next week!

I have/had 5 of them, 3 in one, 2 in the other.  I know for sure at least 2 have passed, and hopefully 3 or 4 (based on the feelings I've had, with none as intense as the first one which landed me in the ER).  My indicator that they were flaring up and causing issues was blood in my urine after each run ......

Yeah, they suck big time.  One of the main reasons I try to drink a lot of fluids all day long.  I don't want to have them be an issue again.

Sorry to hear about the kidney stones but glad you're ok.

It's really an adjustment when the heat & humidity skyrocket , you just don't realize how much more it takes to stay hydrated. A 40 mile ride in May was 2 24 oz bottles, a 40 mile ride this weeekend was at least double that.

Went through 24 ozs of water today on a 6 mile run & could have had more...be careful out there!

Is this an issue from repeatedly being a dehydrated state and occurs over time or ???

This is a great question and one that my urologist tap danced around when I asked him. He told me that the stones form over a long period of time and that mine were most probably as a result of chronic dehydration (a common occurance for the endurace athlete), however (and this is what I really think happened to me) they can form quicker in instances where your core temp is high for a long period of time (think fever or training in 100* for hours at a time on multiple days). The bottom line is until I catch the little bastard when it comes out and let them analyze it, we can only speculate.

Again, drink, drink, drink!!!
