Pre-race routine:

Drove to Columbia on Sat for the packet pick-up and to rack the bike. Klynne and I decided to skip the course info that evening in order to drive the bike course. We really were a bit nervous about the bike and since we have been in other tri's the info would probably be the same as the last races. Really glad that we made that decision!! I had to change my goal times after looking at the ride. Now my goal would be to finish in 2:30. My training hadn't been all that great leading into this race.
Event warmup:

Woke up at 4:25. Grab a cup of coffee and a banana from the hotel. Left at 4:45 and headed to the park. Decided to park on the street instead of fighting the traffic. What a great idea!! Once into the transition area, did the set-up and had a peanut butter sandwich and gatorade with Klynne. Did lots of visiting with all the racers on the rack with me. This was the BIGGEST race I have ever been in. They had said that there were over 2200 women at this race. Such girl power!!!

  • 02m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started in the 6th wave. They had so many women that they had split our AG into two waves. Had to wade in and tread for about 3 minutes before the start. I started outside right and in the middle of the pack. It was slow going for the first 3-400 because of all the people. Got kicked in the face by someone doing the breast stroke and gulped a bunch of air trying to get around everyone and not swim over to many people. With my reflux, all the air in my stomach really started to hurt. HAd to flip over on my back to try and belch. Swimming and try to do that doesn't work very well. Tried that a couple of times then decided to just swim. Came out of the water very happy with my time considering all the people.
What would you do differently?:

No gulp that much air and relax a bit. Was hard gettting into the zone.
Transition 1
  • 03m 4s
Comments:

My position in the transition area wasn't the greatest and had a jaunt. Lots of grass on the feet and took to much time trying to get it off. Forgot my glasses and laid the bike down to go back and get them. Tried to run with the bike, but we had a pretty good hill to climb just getting out of the T.

What would you do differently?:

Not forget my sunglasses, and just be faster out of the water!!!
Bike

Comments:

I was really a bit nervous about this ride. I had heard so much about how hilly this course was going to be, and after driving it on Sat evening, felt a bit better. I was hoping to just push as hard as I could and then slow down to save the legs for the run. The hills were tough but took each one strong. I passed alot of ladies and only got passed a few times. There was a group of ladies that really got me pushing hard and was fun trying to keep up with them. Everyone was so encouraging, which really helped for motivation! Max speed on the down hills was 33mph, that was really the best part!! Got a bit worried towards the middle of the ride because it started to sprinkle and haven't ridden much on wet roads.
Thank goodness it stopped after a few minutes. Was great to see Klynne looking so good on her way back. Coming back into the park I slowed down quite a bit because it got pretty crowded.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe push a bit harder.
Transition 2
  • 02m 27s
Comments:

My transition to run was a bit faster but still slow. Need to practice running without socks, maybe that will help with my transition times.
What would you do differently?:

BE QUICKER!!!!
Run
  • 36m
  • 3.3 miles
  • 10m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

When I started to run through transition had a bad stomach cramp. Not to sure if it was from the gel or from the reflux, but man it was hurting pretty bad. Took it pretty slow for the first .5 mile to get the legs back. My plan was to try and not walk at all for this race but had to walk up the hills twice for very short distances to get the breathing to slow down.
What would you do differently?:

Run more in training. Only had run once in 10 days before this race.
Post race
Warm down:

Once through the finish, got my medal, water and walked back to where the family was. Then grabbed a water and snack.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lak of hard training prior to this race.

Event comments:

I was very nervous coming into this race. One, for the lack of hard training; and two, knowing how hard this race was going to be. To date this was the longest distance for me. I am so extemely pleased with how well I did. My fears of the bike ride were bigger than it actually was. This has been the best and hardest race I've done. I'm so glad that Klynne came and was at the finish to cheer me on! Kevin and the girls were so supportive and was really great to have my mom come and see me finsih so strong. Glad Brenda decided to do this race with me or I would have never registered.

Susan, I am so very proud of you.  Look how far you have come in a year!  You rocked this race (especially considering your area in the transition!!! I mean how far away were you??, a mile???)  Good job girlfriend

Congrats on a great race.  Nothing wrong with adjusting your expectations after some recon.  And then going out to just blow away your goal time.

Great Job.

You had an AWESOME race - way to tackle a tough course!!!!  Thanks for coming up w/ the idea of doing this one.  I've pushed myself much harder in training this summer because it was on my calendar.  It was great to get to hang out with you a bit.

We will have to decide what race(s) we are doing together next year - but I think KLynne has the right idea - you have to do it on one leg.  So there is a prayer of us keeping up w/ youSmile
