I'm thinking of volunteering for IMFL this year and registering the next day for 08. Do you only work at your assigned area (i.e. wetsuit peeler) or can you start at wetsuits, finish it and move to a different area, say T2 or finish line? I'd like to help at different areas to get a well rounded experience. It will be my first IM race (volunteering or otherwise).

you can do as much as you want.  contact the race volunteer coordinator, usually found on the IMFL site and tell them what you want to do.

it's a blast, you'll love it!

I'm scheduled for most of the day at IMMOO..starting with body marking and ending with catching.  As long as you makes sure not to schedule conflicting shifts, you can do as much as you want.

IMKY - I'm swim marshalling this weekend - may stick around and help during the bike, but have to drive home to work the next morning, so I'll be out of there well before the finish probably.

Showing up to volunteer is awesome because:

- you get to scout the course for next year.
- you get totally PUMPED and EXCITED !!
- You get to hang with your buddies from BT
- you are helping make the day possible for others and its greatly appreciated

I'll be racing IMFL and just want to say THANKS !!

Bye the way, make sure you either get to work the finish line, or are free to watch at the finish line from 9-Midnight.  It will totally rock !!  It is the BEST  !!!!

Have a great time out there.

I volunteered at IMFL last year. We attended the volunteer meeting and met with the captains organizing different volunteer area. If you got the t-shirt you were in for that area as a volunteer. We got three shirts and were wetsuit strippers....(it was cool to be up close and personal with athletes but when they gave us gloves..I'm like oh man I got people's urine on me all morning..I'd never being a stripper again), then we were to work on the bike course but they gave us wrong information as to where to go, and we were body markers.

If you want to work finish line you need to apply on-line and you get special ID and can't be added at that volunteer meeting.

I completed a volunteer form on-line and was never contacted and followed up numerous times. It was a bit disorganized last year is what I was told.

It is a great way to give back to the support, get close to athlete and make a huge difference.

I don't know if they all work the same, but IMWI just had a website where you could view all the opportunities and sign up for as many as you wanted (as long as no time conflicts).  Check the race website and there should be a 'volunteer' link.

I signed up for a spot on the bike course so I would be sure to catch my man riding by on his way out to the main loop.  Seems that the early times for finish line cactcher and some other positions went pretty quickly, so the sooner you sign up the better.

For those STILL interested in volunteering (if you are in the area or planning on being there), we have been discussing this in the Wisconsin forum.  Here's the volunteer sight for IMMOO (IMWI):

well I was going to make a mini vacation out of IMFL, but looks like the fiance will be in Key West. So I'll be flying solo. Not sure if I'll still volunteer or just drive down and sign up the day after the race

Kudos to you for volunteering!
I have volunteered for quite a few tris including Ironman and let me offer some words of advice.
Pack your own water/food! I take along a canvas backpack bag always since working an 8+ hr shift with no water at Florida 70.3 and have been glad I did so many times!
Have a great time!
