Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin
United States
Precipitation
Total Time = 3h 02m 13s
Overall Rank = 355/450
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 41/53
Pre-race routine:

Show up, prep transition area
Event warmup:

None
Swim
  • 32m 1s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 57s / 100 yards
Comments:

Surprised myself with the time - pool time would have predicted about a 34 minute time.
What would you do differently?:

Either get out toward front of wave or out of traffic - spent too much time fighting for position. Goggles filled in right eye, making navigation a bit hard. Overall, pleased with time, predicted 2 minutes slower than actual. I need to become a bilateral breather - spent too much time gaging trajectory.
Transition 1
  • 05m 1s
Comments:

Bike jersey stuck on wet back.
What would you do differently?:

Organize shoes better. Left everything in gym bag because of rain. Could have staged under plastic sheeting instead. Saw many others running bike in transition, when instructions were clear that bikes must be WALKED. So much for following rules.
Bike
  • 1h 20m 43s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.47 mile/hr
Comments:

Could have taken one more gel at end of ride. Found myself pushing pace towards the end, which left me little gas for run.
What would you do differently?:

Smoother ride pace, more gel and more liquid intake.
Transition 2
  • 02m 57s
Comments:

Thought running with bike was prohibited, but saw many doing it without sanction. Speed laces helped with shoes. Brought extra pair of socks for run, but did not use.
What would you do differently?:

Due to rain, tried to put everything away in gym bag, probably took extra time. Could have loosened shoes prior to dismount zone and left cleats on bike.
Run
  • 1h 01m 43s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

Did not have much left for run, owing to preparations.
What would you do differently?:

Better training, including speed work. Better bike pacing. Another gel before run start.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Preparation. First triathlon and under my own training regime. No speed work in any discipline during preparations. Even though my swim pace was faster than predicted, I have opportunity to improve significantly - technique is poor. Bike was OK, averaged higher speed than training run on same course three weeks prior. Might consider aero bars and better hydration system. Struggled with run (and this from an old XC runner in HS).

Event comments:

Weather caused nearly an hour delay, but the race organizers kept everyone imformed at appropriate intervals. Kudos to organizers in this regard. Thanks to the volunteers who stood in the rain to help with parking, road closures, course management, hydration stations, and encouragement.

Thanks, Scoobysdad. Had a great time. I read your race report first thing which prompted me to complete my own. I'm starting to use this site as it was intended...training log will be next.

Thanks for taking the time to comment, Phil E....I appreciate the encouragement. I'm hooked now. I'm down in New Berlin, but ride the Glacial Drumlin occasionally.
