Purely weight

 Clydesdale = Men 200lbs +

Athena = Women 150lbs + (although I have seen races where Athenas are 140lbs +)

Some races do also have subdivisions in the classifications, generally by age (0-39, 40+).  There are also some that have clydes, super clydes, etc, where they are split up into small weight ranges (200-225, 226-250, 250+).  I've generally only seen that for the clydes portion, not the Athena.

LOL...yeah...but I don't want to have to totally admit my weight (cuz I'd have no problem qualifying)...

Think we could get super-suits?

BTW - in a recent 10k, is was Clydedales and Filly.

Two questions - what you do ladies prefer? Is this common in the running world?

I think clydesdale and athena is the norm but different races have different names.  Some even use  clyde for the women.  I have head buffalo, hippo and rhino for other races categories.

I don't like those other names at ALL! Clydesdale and Athena are bad enough, but at least it's a majestic horse (that pulls a beer wagon - YES!) and a goddess....

Hippo and Buffalo? I wouldn't even sign up. I would be an AG'er. It would be a little weird to say I was first in the "Hippo" division......

I'm kinda buffaloish but I really like the Hippo idea  I think I mostly feel like this picture...

that's right Hippos kill more people in Africa than any other animal!

I can handle being queen of the hippos.  Almost think I want to name my bike the hippo.  She needs a name and I think this one fits.

It's one thing for a guy to be called a KIND of horse, it's a completely different issue to call a woman just a female horse.  I'll take Athena, thank you very much

What makes a clydesdale/athena?

In my case, I'd say about a dozen half-gallons of Blue Bell Rocky Road.

I think the RD who decided to call women either buffaloes or hippos was crazy.  I felt bad last weekend asking women if they were racing Athena (at least that sounds cool).  I remember one woman saying WHAT'S THAT!?  I said "nothing enjoy the age group".  Hey if she registered as AG it wasn't my job to inform her of the categories.  I could tell that was not going to be a good conversation.  Imagine asking "hey are you a Hippo?"  I don't feel I'm fast enough to go down that road for any reason.

To clarify, my buffalo/hippo comment I have never personally seen the buffalo class used but did read it on BT in another clyde/athena discussion.  The hippo/rhino class are actually for different weight for some races I have been in in Dallas.  Clyde - 194+, rhino - 215+ and hippo - 240 +.  BTW, these were for run only races.

Ah.... yeah.

And Now I Know where the name of the Women's category came from.

I don't think you could find enough suicidal brave volunteers to ask this question of the female athletes.

Athena is kinda neutral.  Sometimes I think it's really funny how guys are ok with size "labels" while girrls will get all up in arms about the same type of thing.

In our state we have two Clydesdale divisions 90kg+ (200lb+) and 100kg+ (220lb+).

Commonly referred to as Clyde and Super Clyde!

yeah I wonder how many tris have 250+ for men other than the Chicago triathlon. My goal is not to be able to be in it though I still have a long way to get to get to that point.
