Total Time = 4h 37m 40s
Overall Rank = 38/1492
Age Group = Elite
Age Group Rank = 14/37
Pre-race routine:

eat one bagel with nutella, drink one ensure, 32 oz of heed and set up Transition area
1st time racing as an Elite so I was nervous cuz I didn't want to have a bad race and make a fool out of myself :)
Event warmup:

10 min jog plus 10 min swim
Swim
  • 29m 20s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 23s / 100 yards
Comments:

swim was good. I started at the front, moved my way to stay FOP and round the 1st bouy on 3rd place. after that I had trouble sighting and dropped back 5-7 places as I swam of course a bit.. Tourning on last bouy I picked up the pace and pass some swimmers.
As soon as I touch sand I stand up to ran to T1 and both legs cramps completely. Quads, hammies and calves all cramped and couldn't even walk to exit the water. I stand there for 1 min (maybe two as it certainly felt it was forever) until I finally was able to gimp out of water. on the edge of the sand I was able to walk slow and when I reach the ramp I was able to speed walk.
What would you do differently?:

I have to figure out this cramping off the water issue. (maybe I stand up too fast???)
Transition 1
  • 02m 10s
Comments:

slow T cuz I just couldn't move fast cuz of the cramps. I barely was able to take wetsuit off and put on socks (it was cold) and shoes without cramping again.
Bike
  • 2h 38m 30s
  • 56 miles
  • 21.20 mile/hr
Comments:

I pushed a bit too hard on the 1st 12 miles (avg 225 watts) and that took a tool on me. I had to focus on fueling a lot due to the cramps issues off the swim. I settle onto my race pace on the next 32 miles riding at 210 watts. coming back last 12 miles I had no strenght and my power dropped to 190 watts). Anyway I knew I was off my goal but instead of focusing on that I had fun thanking police/volunteers at every turn and smiling to the marshalls giving them my I rock hand shake ;)

*** Racing as an Elite is a different beast all together. Not to take anything away from AG but riding your bike pretty much alone for 56 miles is A LOT more difficult. You have marshalls watching you close, you have no 7 meter draft zone benefit from and no slingshot passing to speed up. I loved the challenge and I can't wait to do it again! ***
What would you do differently?:

don't know, legs felt weird since the beginning. Like I wasn't 100% ready for the race and I had trouble generating power.

Transition 2
  • 01m 22s
Comments:

feet were numb but besides that it was a good T2
Run
  • 1h 24m 20s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 06m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

1st 3 miles I was feeling great and racing at my goal pace 6:10 min/mile, but at the hill coming back on the 1st loop both quads start acting like they were going to cramp (like on the swim) and that made me slow down a lot. I had to drink G-ade (plus the usual coke and water I drink every mile) to keep cramps away, plus taking salt pills like candy. mile 4 to 10 it was a hard and a real struggle and pace felt a lot. But hearing the cheers from Phil, Lauren, Rob, Cory, the fast splits team guys, Max, Emily's Mom, etc gave me vital strenght at different points. I considered DNF towards the end of th 1st loop cuz I was struggling a lot to keep on running. Then I reminded about the pink ribbon I had on my back pocket and everything seem easier and kept on going. By mile 10 fueling finally paid off and legs felt great again. I ran mile 11 and 12 on 6:10s min/mile and last 1.1 mile ran on 5:40s min/mile. I passed a few athletes to post the 17 fastest run even though it was 4 min slower of my goal
What would you do differently?:

nothing much. after my leg fracture I only had 6 weeks to work on my run endurance and was only able to log around 100 Mi total
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

not enough training time. But it was a B race and I'll keep working towards Cancun and Clearwater. Plus this was by far the most competitive race I have ever done and that is just plain cool!

Event comments:

Good race considering the leg fracture issue, limited running fitness and my debut on the Elite division :)
I am ready for more!!!

scary to think what you'll be like when you put it all together. It's cool that the elite level gives you a new perspective. No doubt you will do well there. As you said, a good for effort given where you came from.

Great job out there! Sorry about the cramping issues, but you still had a decent T1 despite that. I saw you coming back on the bike on 106 and you looked strong. (I was viewing you from all by my lonesome and not a TdF peleton .)

Oh, and thanks for ignoring me on the run.

Nice work! Good luck at Cancun and Clearwater!

Great race!!!  Hopefully, we'll get to see what you can really do fully trained and healthy one of these days.

You're running pace after going "too hard" on the bike just makes me sick.  Wink

Nice race in spite of the odd cramping!  I think I saw you running during your last mile, but you were going so fast I couldn't get a good look at your number!

Wow, I admire your guts to stick it out after having cramping issues start right after the swim. I agree with earlier comments that it's going to be awesome once you get everything put together. Great race and good luck in Cancun and Clearwater!!

Great race Jorge, and way to stick it out when things weren't going your way.  Now, you just need to figure out a way to rub some of that speed off onto me for next year!!!  Remember, we can't let Stacey beat me next year (don't tell her that I have discussed this with you Wink).

Congrats!!! and See you at C'Berry!!

Adios

Nice job!  I wonder if your wetsuit could have something to do with your cramping?  Maybe it constricts stuff?  I don't know, just a wild guess there.

Wow. I saw you limping your way to T1. I had no idea who you were, but I was with a whole bunch of people who were clapping for you simply because of your determination. I'm really impressed that you went the distance, and especially in that time. Congrats!

Great race considering everything you've been through in the last year!  Weird about the cramps ... maybe an electrolyte issue and you need to pop some Endurolytes before the swim??

Way to battle through the run until you felt up to speed again and congrats on racing in the elite wave!  About time!

Awesome race man! Way to push through the pain.  That silly pink ribbon will have that affect on you.  All I got to say is the Elites better watch out.

Honestly, who cramps after the swim?  C'mon now, how many races have you used this excuse?  Only kidding, amazing race hotstuff!  Congrats on such a great finish after everything you've been through this season (especially having to deal with a silly blonde every Saturday morning this summer!)  I'm soooo excited to see what the rest of the season holds for you!

*I am so excited and hornored that I have the opportunity to train with an ELITE triathlete.  That "WOW, I am riding with Jorge" is a real "wow".*

Great race out there, and awesome to tough it out when you felt like quitting.  You should have wore that pink ribbon on the outside so everyone can see it.

It was nice to finally meet you after the race. That is one impressive run you did out there. A 5:40 over the last mile is crazy fast.

Good luck at Clearwater, I hope to see you down there. I'm doing Cancun in '08 so I'm looking forward to seeing how things go for you down there next month.

Despite the challenges that were thrown your way during the race, you did great. I can't image what you would have been like if you hadn't had those issues.

Oh and by the way, I don't care what Dave says. We can't let him beat me. I need to beat him in one race!!!!!!

See you at Cranberry!!!!

Way to join the ranks of the Elites, Jorge:  with a bang!

I think since the lake didn't have a chance to break your leg this time, it just gave you cramps.  You really need to make peace with the Mermaid People before Clearwater!!

Seriously, good overall race.  One day my "B" race will be as fast as yours.
