Subject: Does Coffee Cause Mucsle Problems?
Over my past 3 or 4 workouts, I have had the sensation of the dreaded muscle strain in my left quad. I think its because I drink a ridiculous amout of coffee at work (5 to 6 cups). I was told the caffine in coffee causes dehydration. I planned on cutting back in preparation for the tri, but I'm not sure if this is the reason for the "tightness"/minor pain. I haven't done my long run this week since I'm a little concerned about a full blown pull three weeks out.

Should I ditch the coffee or is this another urban legend? Oh, how I love the java, but this I've worked to hard to pull a muscle or suffer a leg cramps due to coffee.

There may be reasons to cut back from 5-6 cups per day.  But this isn't one of them.

I don't have specific research to back this up, but I've got a lot of experience and I'd say that the coffee is not the problem. I drink well over twice the amount of coffee you do in a day along with a few esspressos, and I have never had any sort of muscle problems from the caffeine.

There have been some recent studies(sorry can't find the links) that have said that caffeine is no more a diuretic than drinking water. Other people dispute that, but as long as you're drinking water you should be fine.

I would be looking for other reasons for the muscle pain.

I fessed up at my annual physical regarding the coffee consumption and the Doc said there is no evidence it causes harm to your overall well being, but nothing specific about muscle cramps and pulls.

Glad to hear the coffee isn't the problem...I start work at 7.a.m., and my coffee is my companion!!!

Thanks for the quick replies.

Not the coffee, you just need to run more.

Some soreness  is part of the natural process of your legs adapting to the training.  Try walking for 5-10minutes at the end of each run, this will keep the legs from setting up so much.  Also swimming afterwards seems to help get the muscles back in balance.

It's funny, but I think it didn't come from running, but rather a stupid spin class I took (it was 102 degrees and I needed to brick!!!). Sorry spinners...no intent to offend, but this teacher sucked. I noticed it the next day swimming...just one quad and sort of deep inside. The feeling was almost crampy, and that's why I thought of the coffee.

I plan on running more, but I'm trying to protect the muscle a bit this week. I know muscle soreness from overuse, and this feels much different.

When is the tri? In the next couple of weeks you're not going to add anything to the engine to change your results.

IMO, sounds like strain to me. Stretch and keep your runs easy if you have to run. If I were would rest it and give it a couple of days.

Sept 16. I have an OWS today, and then I was going to do an EASY (on both ride and run) brick tomorrow.

I must admit a little panic set in when I felt it.

While this shouldn't be a surprise, in some cases typing and reading my not even be possible without the coffee in the first place.
