CAPRI Events
70F / 21C
Overcast
Total Time = 50m 40s
Overall Rank = 262/700
Age Group = M30-39
Age Group Rank = 77/117
Pre-race routine:

Got up in plenty of time, pumped up my tires and Hansen's before leaving Heidi Claire's on Erie St. Breakfast was a packet of granola and some kind of energy bar that was included in our race packs, along with some water.

Rode in the pouring down rain along Lakeshore Dr. to get to the event.
Event warmup:

Stood underneath some kind of shelter to stay out of the rain.
Run
  • 11m 59s
  • 1 miles
  • 11m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

I wasn't pleased about this at all, as I already had a bum wheel. I managed to keep a slow jog pace throughout and tried to focus on finding a way to run without my ankle really hurting badly. Old women were passing me.
What would you do differently?:

Try not to hurt my ankle the week before the event.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

They didn't give us transition times, which is kind of a bummer. At least I'm not smart enough to figure out how to find them if they did.
What would you do differently?:

Go through the transition area with a chainsaw and take out all the low-lying branches. At least everyone had to deal with it, as many of the branches were as low as four feet off the ground. I don't know how they can set up a transition area with obstacles like that.
Bike
  • 19m 45s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 18.87 mile/hr
Comments:

I was hoping to average 20mph and probably would've, were it not for the lap turns. I probably could've pushed it a little more, it's not like I was saving anything for the run afterwards.
What would you do differently?:

Not enter a race that requires laps and bottleneck turns
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Again, no transition times were given. Kinda sucks. I wasn't looking to beat the world at this point anyway. At this point, the transition area was terrible muddy. Some mats in at least the entrance and exit areas would've been nice.
Run
  • 18m 55s
  • 1.55 miles
  • 12m 12s  min/mile
Comments:

I did about a 60/40 split between a slow jog and a fast walk. My ankle wasn't screaming at me, but it was speaking in a harsh tone at this point and I didn't feel like pushing it too much.
What would you do differently?:

Not enter a race that had a course so vulnerable to the weather.
Post race
Warm down:

Met up with Gwendolyn and Hansen and got Hansen ready for his race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

A bad ankle sprain and bruised knee.

Event comments:

We were told there would be no race day packet pick-up, yet I saw dozens of people doing just that. At least I stayed at a friend's apartment, so that didn't cost me an extra night in a hotel.

They didn't have the normal velcro straps for timing chips and instead used the bracelets, like you'd wear around your wrist at Noah's Ark. Needless to say, it didn't come close to fitting around my ankle and they gave you a second colored bracelet which was supposed to get you into the "party" the next day, but they kept announcing at the race that your bib number was your ticket in. I ended up having to knot my timing chip into my shoelaces.

There was not evnough parking for participants, the transition area was poorly planned and the hassles of dealing with Chicago were too much for me to consider doinig this event again

Like father, like son. Hansen did better on the bike than the run and had a great time. He wants to do this event again, but I'll probably look for one closer to home for him.
