Total Time = 2h 28m 22s
Overall Rank = 225/3928
Age Group = M 35-39
Age Group Rank = 56/521
Pre-race routine:

Got there early to get a good rack spot as close to bike out as possible. Walked transition area to bike outs and run outs to refamiliarize myself with tran area (2nd timer).

Walked swim to look for sighting guideposts.
Event warmup:

Does waiting in the porta-potty line count?
Swim
  • 30m 59s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

Overall, happy with swim time... Didn't draft alot but it's not always easy finding someone the right pace to draft off of...

2 1/2 minutes faster this year than last.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 1
  • 02m 29s
Comments:

Good transition. I had a Happy Birthday Balloon to help me find my stuff in a super huge tran area. It worked.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 1h 04m 25s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 23.15 mile/hr
Comments:

Got a little scare running over a full gatorade bottle on second lap. The thing exploded but the bike came through okay.

Was actually faster going into last segment, but held back a bit to try to avoid cramping on the run. Didn't work, but was pretty fresh for the run, at least...

I've got at least 1 maybe 2 mph more in me for same conditions next year...

Does anyone know a good bike shop in the Chicago area? I'm getting faster and faster on the bike (up over 2 mph from last year at Accenture and 100/3928 this year), but still can't find a bike shop that can give me smooth, consistent (not skipping gears) shifting with Dura Ace components on a year old bike.
What would you do differently?:

Continue to push the last 6 miles or so (lost probably .5 to .75 mph over last 6 miles to try to avoid cramping on the run)
Transition 2
  • 02m 19s
Comments:

Forgot to get my Polar HRM/Spd watch off of the bike, Lost about 20-30 seconds retrieving it. Otherwise okay.
What would you do differently?:

Remember the HRM/Spd watch (or get new stand alone on bike computer)
Run
  • 48m 10s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

Not a bad run considering I cramped (side cramps) the entire run. Hurt, but I have had them enough that I can maintain a decent (albeit slower) pace with them. Probably lost 15-20 seconds/mile.

45 seconds/mile faster this year than last.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked back to get gear...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Fear of cramping on the run (when I was on the bike), and actual cramping on the run... Overall, probably lost b/w 3-5 minutes...

Event comments:

Does anyone have good bike shop in Chicago/NW Suburb area?

I have found that the Bike Shop in Glen Ellyn are pretty good guys. Granted I am a total newbie with this stuff... But they have helped me a lot.

They aren't NW burbs, but it might be closer than driving out to mission bay in elgin.

just my 2 cents

Great race! I beat you by 3 seconds on the swim and 8 seconds on the run.  Unfortunately (for me) you crushed the bike and transitions.  Look out next year fellow 35-39 year-old and BT'er!!!!

Nice race! Not sure where in the NW suburbs you are, but George Garner Cyclery in Northbrook (and I think Libertyville) is the place I get my Trek Madone serviced; they have been fantastic.

Nice race, well prepared and executed.

I am a fan of Smart Cycling in Glenview. Very knowledgable, and better than the other two bike shops I have used. My friend likes a place in Schaumburg that is part hobby store, part bike shop called something like Choo Choo Connection and Cycle shop on Roselle road.

Great job, we had similar races but your biking was awesome. I do not live in Chicago, sorry can't help there...
