Total Time = 2h 54m 49s
Overall Rank = 1586/3928
Age Group = m30-34
Age Group Rank = 244/484
Pre-race routine:

None
Event warmup:

Got up at 4 a.m. to get into transition by 4:15. I live only a few blocks from the race so that's nice. Racked and set up transition and was sleeping back at the condo by 5 a.m. Got back up at 6:15 and left at 6:30. Stopped and got a plain bagel. Got to the race at 7 a.m., got my wetsuit on and waited for the race.
Swim
  • 40m 46s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 29s / 100 yards
Comments:

OK as was the case last year it's way too crowded to get any rhythm really going. The first 200-300 yards sucked. I was sure I was going to have to quit after getting swam over and swimming over people, getting kicked, elbowed and generally molested. Once I rounded the buoy back north it was OK until the fast guys from the next wave rolled over me. Then at the end the fast guys from the FOLLOWING wave sent me tumbling. Ugh. And some jackass grabbed my leg and held onto it. I, of course, returned the favor.
What would you do differently?:

I need to take some swim lessons somewhere. I'm SO incredibly slow. I realize, though, that I just can't swim faster without training.
Transition 1
  • 03m 46s
Comments:

F***ing wetsuit would NOT come off! I mean I ended up having to finesse it off. It took forever! And of course it was muddy in transition so I had to clean my feet before even trying to put on my socks. Sucked all around.
What would you do differently?:

Body Glide. Body Glide. And, oh yeah, Body Glide!
Bike
  • 1h 15m 7s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.85 mile/hr
Comments:

Good bike for me. I was hoping to average 20 mph but fell short. Not sure why, exactly, perhaps I'm just slow.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. It all goes back to training. RIDE LOTS! Really I'm very happy.
Transition 2
  • 03m 57s
Comments:

I just took my time. I ate a couple of packets of GU and drank some water and some Gatorade. Took off the bike shoes and threw on the run shoes. PRetty simple and relaxing.
What would you do differently?:

Move quicker.
Run
  • 51m 10s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

OK knock about 2:30 off this time because I had to stop to use the men's room -- a portajohn about mile 2. I just couldn't hold it and figured I'd rather just go than do permanant bladder damage! Run was OK. At mile 4 my quads started cramping. At mile 6 they went into full lockdown, and that slowed me, but who the f*** gives up with 2 miles left, much less 2/10 of a mile???
What would you do differently?:

Take some of those pills that prevent you from cramping. Midol, is it? I should've pushed myself a little more. My legs were starting to give out and I didn't want a repeat of Elkhart Lake.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank water and Gatorade, ate a bagel and a banana and went and got my bag and bike.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Sucking at swimming and cramps during the run. I guess I have to resign myself to the fact that without committing more to the sport I'll always be a near-3-hour finisher. And I"m OK with that!

Event comments:

The only thing I didn't like was thee were no volunteers during transition setup and some of the wave racks were hard to find. Not mine, but several people wandered around forever.

Nice race overall.  Good job persevering through the adversities.  With a race like Chicago, there will be plenty to deal with!!!  That mud was unblieveable!!!

Thanks all y'all.

Funny thing is I finished bottom 25 percent in the swim, top 38 percent in the bike and top 25 percent in the run. I think we all know where I need work.

It was funny that on the run I was passing people left and right with a `19' on the back of their leg, indicating we were in the same wave. That felt good.

I envy your ability to go back to sleep in your own bed after setting up transition. I laid down a blanket on concrete to avoid wet and muddy grass.

Great race and good luck on the swim improvement. I think you can consider your time as more of a swim/run because of the distance to T1.

Can you imagine those few brave souls who swam without a wetsuit??

Congratulations! Great job in those crowded conditions, your swimming seems fine considering the environment. BTW, I think I would have just peed on myself...WTF.

I really can't. I had a hard enough time catching my breath with a sleeveless. The funny part was I debated right before leaving swapping out the sleeveless for the full-sleeve and thought `nah, it'll be warm enough.' Stupid.

I like your description of the race start, nothing like paying $140 to be molested at the start. The mud was fun, I trashed my in-laws bathroom washing it out after the race. Good luck and good job...

Water temp 58-61!  Supposedly 5 cases of hypothermia!  Now that, my friends, is cold water!

Yeah I really felt for the guys without wetsuits. And before my wave started I was watching and I saw some poor bastard lose his goggles and make a beeline for the side. He grabbed the rope and his teeth were literally chattering. I don't know what happened to him but I can't imagine he continued.

AND THAT'S WHY I WEAR TWO GOGGLES, PEOPLE!!!

I wear mine under my cap for that very reason.  But even if I did lose them, wouldn't stop me.  It would just slow me down something fierce.  I've actually trained in the pool without just in case.  Well, I should say I have swam at least a 200 without just to see what it is like.  I can do it, it just isn't fun.  Nor easy.
