Pre-race routine:

I didn't get much sleep Friday or Saturday night. I was a little nervous for my first tri. I woke up at 5am on Sunday morning, got dressed and headed to the beach. I had a bagel w/PB and some OJ for breakfast.
Event warmup:

I did a little stretching and talked with some other atheletes about the swim that we were about to encounter. They were expecting winding conditions on the lake. The rest of the time I hung out with my wife and kids.
Swim
  • 11m 8s
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 01s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was a first year event so I expect that they will move the swim course to be beyond the sandbars so we wont have to deal with this again.
Transition 1
  • 04m 16s
Comments:

We had about a 200 yard run from the water to the transition area. I had the wetsuit halfway off from the water to the transition area but had a difficult time getting the wetsuit off of my legs once in the transition area.
What would you do differently?:

I spent a little time drinking water and having a gel in area vs. jumping on the bike and doing it while riding.
Bike
  • 37m 56s
  • 10 miles
  • 15.82 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt very comfortable on the bike today.
Transition 2
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

A little slow on this transition. I once again drank water in the transition vs. on the course.
What would you do differently?:

Rack the bike, put on the shoes and go.
Run
  • 28m 45s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

I thought my run was OK by my standards. I have been running between a 9:10 and a 9:45/mile the last couple of weeks. Obviously there are some great runners out there in my AG. The closest guy next to me was a minute faster. The best part about the run was having a young girl standing on a ladder at the mile mark with a hose spraying everyone.
Post race
Warm down:

Pizza, breadsticks and fruit. I stretched for about 10 minutes.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

First timer.

Course: The course was set parallel to the beach between the 2nd and 3rd sandbars in about 5.5 feet of water. However, anyone that understands the Great Lakes can understand what can happen when the wind changes directions. Basically what happened is the wind changed directions overnight and part of the course ended up in 2 feet of water. Obviously that was a little difficult to swim in. Everyone ended up walking part of the way. We also had some decent size waves to deal with.

Course: A very simple out and back. The course was shortened due to construction. My bike computer showed a longer distance and a faster time. Who knows what the real distance was since it shortened a couple of times. Next year promises to be very scenic along the lakeshore. One issue was having to deal with a major crossroad in which I was stopped for a short time.

Great job on your first tri.  I'm originally from Port Huron and was excited to see that they finally have a tri.  I was curious about the swim because I used to lifeguard at Lakeside Beach and remember that the water was pretty shallow for a fair distance.  It sounds like it has the potential to be a great race in the future.  Hopefully, I'll get back to town one of these summers and can add this race to my schedule.

Great Job!
