Pre-race routine:

I would like to thank Kathy G for making the plans at a nice resturant on Sat. PM for a bunch ouf us to get togeether and hang before the race.

Was asleep earlier than normal, which was good since I slept like crap as usual. Picked up DK at the hotel next door and went to the race. At my usual routine of DD bacon, egg and cheese on crosaunt. Racked, got the car boxed in, and hung out
Event warmup:

GASBAGG what else.
Swim
  • 27m 3s
  • 1408 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was behind only two people at the start of the wave, and somehow got boxed in big time. Drafted ok for the first 400, but lost the feet and the rest was history. Did a pretty good job navigating and had great rounding of bouys. For the first time ever in a race I tried the 90 deg flip turn to get around a bouy I was too close to. It worked great as I picked up a full body legth from the person I was next too.
What would you do differently?:

train more. Had almost no OWS for 3 weeks before the race. I was 2:18 slower than last years time.
Transition 1
  • 03m 26s
Comments:

Was quite happy with this transtion. Was unable to run hard through, but got a great spot near the exit. Also did not have the same problems as last year with equipment trouble (forgetting the strap to my aero bottle).
What would you do differently?:

not much.
Bike
  • 1h 21m 30s
  • 24.9 miles
  • 18.33 mile/hr
Comments:

Due to pre race smack talk, it was PR or bust for me. Knew I needed to be in the 18+ mph range to have a chance. wasw faster by 50 seconds than last year, but I think they shortend one of the climbs at the end by about a 1/2 mile, so I am not sure it is relative.
What would you do differently?:

TRAIN!! My overall volume of training in August was 1/2 of last year and 1/3 of Julys, so you get out what you put in.
Transition 2
  • 01m 44s
Comments:

their was a speed bump comming into the bike dismount area. Since I had to slow anyways, I tried to get my feet on the shoes while going. Have practiced it a little, it was not pretty, but I liked the results.
What would you do differently?:

Loosen my yanks a little. Had some trouble getting the shoes on.
Run
  • 1h 13m 47s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 11m 54s  min/mile
Comments:

went out of the transtion with the goal of a great run. Very unrealistic, but you do not know what you can do without pushing yourself. Got about 1.5 miles in and almost colapsed. I was hopping to get to the mile 2 water stop before a walk break. Got swept up by MatriMom as she walked by at just the right tiime. I was about to start 20+ minute mile pace when she said, lets go together. Between her week stomach and my shot legs, we worked well together getting to the finish.

Got passed by DK about the same time as we started going together. At about mile 5 I realize DK was still in sight. Started to try and close the gap as best I could. I would attept to run 30 seconds longer than DK when she started to walk. I closed about 1/3 of a mile when I hit the last down hill. Somehow I sprinted past Sue. Very surprised I stayed on my feet. As I got to the last turn to the finishing chut, I tried to time my pass of DK on the way to the finish line. Got to about 100 yerds from the line, caught her and said "how dare you pass me on the run!!"

DK started to sprint as if I had just threatend her with a knife. I put my head down, could see her checking over her shoulder, but I had no chance to catch her.
What would you do differently?:

TRAIN!! same as the bike
Post race
Warm down:

went to one knee after the line, and ended up sitting for what felt like 20 minutes. Glen jumped into the finish area and started dumping cold water on me and putting towels on me. He said he could feel the heat comming off of me. Temp wise I actualy felt good. I was still sweating and not too hot. I just went way to fast in the finsih with energy I did not have to give.I think my HR spiked around 170. Mind you 155 is my threashold on the run and about the same on the bike. so I left it all on the course for this race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training big time.

Event comments:

still one of my favorite races. Most of that is due to the BT reunion each year.

Heheh.. nice to know your side of the story on the run.  Thanks for pushing me to the finish.  I really didn't expect to sprint.

I was afraid you were going to throw up at the finish line.  Glad you are ok.

Great race and even great to see you.  Way to stick it out on the run and then pick it up at the end.  We saw you and Denise finish, it was great to see you two pushing each other.

Adios
Dave
