Expert 1180 Iowa | Subject: Let me hear you order a meal ... Do you eat like an athlete in training when you go out, or like 90% of Americans? The challenge to eating out is being able (or unble) to control the contents of the food going into your mouth. Processed foods contain saturated fat, hydrogenated oil, partially hydrogenated oil, BHT and blah blah blah. Order a meal and let's see how, or if, you take control. Here's me ordering lunch: Club soda with a lime. Small side salad, no bacon, no bacon dressing, etc. Lemon wedge and olive oil for dressing, on the side, please. Grilled chicken sandwich on whole wheat with lettuce and tomato, no mayo. Bring spicy brown mustard if you have it, yellow if you don't. No fries. Fresh fruit, cottage cheese (low fat) or vegetables instead. What and how do you order? Edited by triman50 2004-10-18 2:12 PM |

Champion 5495 Whizzzzzlandia | Subject: RE: Let me hear you order a meal ... The other day at the Corner Bakery....with a friend... Her-- "I can't make up my mind what I want..." Me-- "Me neither" Her-- "Why don't we get two entrees and split them?" Me--"Great idea" So we split an entree sized salad, with Ranch dressing and corn relish (yummmmm) and she had a paninni sandwich and I had a turkey and swiss sandwich with avocado on whole grain bread...instead of chips I asked for veggies on the side. It was still way too much food... and I took most of the sandwich home! But a vast improvement over my usual and customary eating habits, which sound more like this: "Welcome to McDonalds what would you like today" "A Big Mac, Large Fry and a Diet Coke with a lemon wedge! And plenty of little ketchup packs!" I'm in the process of reforming my diet, in order to maintain the weight loss I had this past season. I lost 11 lbs and I've kept it off, but it's going to be tough in the off season.... Ugh.... It's a process..... |

Entire food consumption for today Breakfast: an apple and a handful of red grapes. Lunch today: Grilled chicken breast on a bed of spring mix, and a handful each of raw broccoli, cauliflower and carrots. Dinner this evening: grilled salmon, steamed vegetable medley (yes, more broccoli, cauliflower and carrots). Snacks: a banana at 10 this morning and probably another one at 3 this afternoon. Pro 5153 Helena, MT | Subject: RE: Let me hear you order a meal ... I think I eat somewhere between what an athlete in training eats and the general population. When I cook, it's usually grilled fish, vegetarian fare, stir fry.... etc. Really healthy. When I eat out, it's usually real food (ie, nothing fried, no trans fats, just chicken or fish, veggies and a starch). I eat alot of those big burritos (I save half for the next day) with chicken, rice, beans (not refried) and veggies. Of course, you just had to post this after I had a 1/4 lber with cheese, fries and a sprite. But I haven't eaten like that in probably 2-3 months... I figure that's acceptable. |

Expert 680 NC Illinois | Subject: RE: Let me hear you order a meal ... Bear ... the thread is about how you eat when you go out to eat. We eat out after church on Sundays and that's about it. In between it's a steady diet of egg sandwiches & milk, pasta-meat-veggies, steak-veggies. Having said that, if I ate what you did I'd be chewing my arm off by 1pm. Do you weight 145 pounds or what? |

Resident Curmudgeon 25290 The Road Back | Subject: RE: Let me hear you order a meal ... 185 and struggling to stay there, or hopefully get down to 180. I've weighed as much as 240. I'll eat a little more in the evenings before long runs/rides, mostly low-fat carbo-heavy foods, whole wheat bread and pasta, baked potatoes. Ditto on the going out to eat, it's so rare, occasionally on Saturday for lunch and I pretty much stick to the grilled chicken salad. Logans makes a great one. When I travel, it's a different story, try to sample the regional cuisine. In Chicago I had pizza at both Gino's East and Pizzeria Uno, but again, that's rare for me. |

Master 1791 Raleigh, North Carolina | Subject: RE: Let me hear you order a meal ... Breakfast: /pulls up to Biscuitville. One ultimate bacon/egg/cheese biscuit. Enjoy with the coffee at work Lunch - 90% of time packed from home: Turkey on light wheat, canteloupe, crackers, and water/juice/gatorade Dinner: Potluck - something nasty - frozen food type thing. Microwave chicken cordon bleu. When schedules work out with everyone we have a family dinner that's usually lasagna (yumm), chicken, or potluck. Eating out at lunch - 10% of the time: McDonald's Big&Tasty with cheese, fries, Dr. Pepper Dinner: Bengoshi's Japanese Steakhouse - Sumo special This kind of diet would hold my weight steady before I started tri-training. Now its not enough. The pounds keep coming off so I'm supplimenting with the occasional snack - sometimes healthy, sometimes not (m&m's are my downfall). Once I'm done building base, my plan is to get my nutrition figured out and start supplimenting with pre-workout, during workout, postworkout appropriate foods. Extreme Veteran 381 Peoria, Arizona | Subject: RE: Let me hear you order a meal ... Usually something like: We'll have an extra large new york style with pepperoni, and ... (add your favorites). I don't eat out a lot, but generally when I do it is on the weekend with friends for pizza and wings (my BIG downfall) - oh yeah and beer. Occassionally, I will go out to lunch with the people from work, but then I generally order a grilled chicken salad. If I eat anything more filling for lunch I am shot for the afternoon wondering if anyone would notice if I took a nap. |

Expert 1180 Iowa | Subject: RE: Let me hear you order a meal ... OK, had a complete breakdown since my lunch of spring mix/spinach and sliced grilled chicken. with ice water. Some idiot in the office had the gall to have a birthday today and so the place is laden with GREAT TREATS. I've had: 1 chocolate chip cookie, 2 brownies, one large slice of fruit-whipped-cream-on-some-kind-of-crust thing, and a reprehensibly large piece of spice cake smothered in white frosting. Excuse me now while I enjoy this sugar high ........ |

Extreme Veteran 493 Greer, South Carolina | Subject: RE: Let me hear you order a meal ... At lunch, it's usually and McDonald's value meal super sized w/ a die t coke. You get some really strange looks from the kid behind the counter when they bring you your diet coke. For dinner, it's a sald with cheese, bacon, and some really fatt y salsd dressing followed by a steak and a loaded baked potato( cheese, bacon, sour cream, butter) and something chocolate with lots of chocolate syrup on top for desert. Unfortunately, to make up for every meal I eat out, I have to eat nothing but grilled chicken, steamed vegetables, and fruit for the next week. |

Champion 4902 Ottawa, Ontario | Subject: RE: Let me hear you order a meal ... I never eat lunch at work--not in restaurants anyways. That's during the week...but come Friday, every Friday without fail my wife and I go to a nice restaurant for a great dinner. The hell with training or "trying" to lose weight, it's our one night of redemption for a week's work and the rush of shopping during the weekend. At my favourite Italian restaurant I would order something like: a half liter of white wine (Pinot Griogio for my wife and I), bruschetta and muscles as an entrée; the main meal would be veal scallopini with rigattoni and manicotti stuffed with cheese and spinach. For desert, black coffee followed by a glass of amaretto on the rocks. Good...yah! |

Veteran 300 Peoria AZ | Subject: RE: Let me hear you order a meal ... I eat whatever I want when I want it but usually can only force down enough to not make much of a difference in my weight. I thought the reason I wasn't losing weight lately was because of that eating methodology but after reading another thread on here I found that the cause might be that my workouts are in the HR RED ZONE (carb burn only). This off-season I'll continue to eat the same and switch my workouts to a more fat burning HR. Oh and… Me: I’m starved, what’s for dinner? Wife: yatta yatta (usually not containing the key word protein) Me: All right!!! Is there meat in it or can I add some in some fashion? Wife: Well it wouldn’t taste the same (subtle hint, it’s special the way she made it). Me: Sounds good. Afterwards Me: Is there seconds (smacking my lips after thoroughly having enjoyed the meal)? |

Check this out from last Saturday: starter: elk-stuffed quail with a blueberry sauce - entree: arctic char over new potato and dill salad with wild boar bacon - dessert: chocolat pecan souffle and two very yummy bottles of red wine. I LOVE food. |
