Well, I can't say I really watch others' grocery carts. I might now! LOL! But, to me, the part that was offensive is that it was a stereotype. Yup a lot, possibly even a majority of obese people have horrible diets. But it's not the fatter the person, the more junk they eat/buy across the board.

And yeah, most of the time it's not genetics and I wasn't throwing out the genetics defense for my mom. But there are things that many people overlook, compulsive overeating.... emotional eating (which are looked at as disgusting habits rather than the psychological problems they are)... health problems/medications. In so many cases, it's not 100% sloth, so I don't think that we slender folk are really justified in being as self-righteous as is so often the case (I'm not trying to call anyone here names, it's just stuff you hear a lot.)

"I would bet that most dedicated exercisers would cheer on any overweight person who is out there trying to lose weight, not make fun of them." I think any decent human being would, but what about an overweight person you see NOT trying to lose weight. Are we somehow better than them? Do you think they really don't understand that eating too much and not exercising enough is how they got that way (barring med. circumstances)? That's like a smoker not understanding that smoking is how s/he got lung cancer! I mean, no need to lie to anyone. If they ask you, be honest, of course. But, pointing it out? Well, I personally, would find it to be very rude and hurtful if someone wanted to point out the errors of my ways because they live a superior lifestyle.

P.S. Just fyi, I'm not mad or anything. Just debating for debates sake. That ol' text based communication gets people sometimes. :-)

I hate skinny people (while we are making massive generalizations based on shopping carts, I will generalize based on some pretty shallow comments I've heard on this thread).  I hate their attitude, their smug superiority and their flippant attitude.  What in the world do they know about weighing 400 pounds? About trying to excersize when it hurts to walk? In my experience, when people feel the need to criticize like some of you are, to make fun and to lump their own imperfect selves with the winners-getting some vicarious validation, it usually covers massive insecurities and an overwhelming need of acceptance that I find more abhorant than someone who is overweight.

"I hate it when you do that...."

Mais, pourquoi?  Okay, so this is an English forum, I will concede that.  It's just that whenever I am in a French restaurant, I order in French.  In Italians restaurants I order in Italian, although around here some of the so-called Italian waiters do not speak Italian!  For all the rest, I order in English.

Mach, my French is terrible, but my knowledge of food makes up for it. A nice spread you've ordered there Seriously though, Pinot Grigio? Perhaps a nice Riesling Kabinett would be better? Glad to see that you don't mess up your coffee with sugar...

Darnit, I just lost a really good long post.  I'll have to summarize.

I would never approach a stranger and say anything other than a compliment.  I was raised to behave better than that.

In general, I get frustrated by people who exhibit a victim mentality, whether it has to do with their weight or whatever else.  That's my main issue.  As long as you're not whining, blaming something else and doing the opposite of what you know will solve the problem, you're okay in my book.  And even you do all of those things, as long as you aren't talking to me about it to me, I won't say anything.  But if you bring it to me, I assume you're asking for feedback and I will give it, albeit gently and with encouragement.

As far as eating issues and whatnot, I've been there, done that.  It has taken me years to deal with my own horrible habits (the list is very long) and I empathize with others who are dealing with theirs.

I prefer to order Pinot Gis with my meal.  I do love Riesling with dessert or a nice white Chardonnay with cheese and grapes.  Although I like red wine, I find that it gives me a headache...also my wife does not drink red, just white.  So we pretty much stick to white wines.

I'm so late to this thread, it's pathetic. But, I'll add my latest dinner-out order anyway (at a Mexican place last Sat. night).

Pollo tampiqueno - basically grilled seasoned chicken breast
Mexican rice
Garden salad with ranch on the side, which I only used half of
Meal came with refried beans, but I didn't eat them.
Diet coke with lemon

If not for the chips and salsa I ate while waiting for our food, it wouldn't have been too bad.

I don't disagree with any of that. I just find it offensive that anyone thinks that, across the board, anyone who is overwieght or obese must be eating Twinkies and Ho-Hos all day long. I understand now, that that's not what you think. It's just what I originally heard (not by you, but you seemed to agree) and what I originally felt the need to speak up about. That's all. :-)

Sounds like Frank got the message earlier than the Mick.

Cool, I've never heard that quote before, but I'm not much of a football fan j/k I know he played baseball... I just hope that I haven't damaged myself too badly, but since I don't (and didn't) smoke, do drugs or drink much, I think I might have a chance

Or even better, a nice white Burgundy or true Chardonnay. If you're going with French, you might as well have the French wine to go with it.

That's why I picked a Kabinett, it's dryer than a Spatlese.

That's why I picked a Kabinett, it's dryer than a Spatlese. As far as the red wines go, some wineries sulfate the heck out of their wines, and some people are allergic (headaches are a common symptom) to that. Have you tried a red wine by a vinyard that makes a white that you like?

pooh bear -

Check this out from last Saturday: starter: elk-stuffed quail with a blueberry sauce - entree: arctic char over new potato and dill salad with wild boar bacon

Whoa!  That is the most Canadian sounding menu I have ever heard of!!  I must say, though, that I  have never eaten elk, quail or wild boar.  Everyone is going to think that these are staples in the Canadian diet!   Sounds yummy!  Hope they were REAL blueberries!!

When I was pushing 200+ and had not really worked out in ages, my grocery carts still had loads of veggies, lean meats and whole grains. I never ate much junk, really - I did shred cheese on alot of things! I do admit to feeling smug when I looked into carts loaded with white bread, coke, and frozen pizzas, regardless of the size of the person buying it. In fact, I would convince myself that the skinny people buying that stuff probably did crackl!

I ate like I was on my honeymoon for the last week. Oh, that's right, I WAS on my honeymoon this last week! Lounging around a cabin eating roasted pork, asian noodles and fig newtons and wine and is there any ice cream left??????? Well, the hours we spent on the hiking trails and other, ahem, activities probably balanced out the horrendous calorie loading....

Scuba-punk: so where did you chose for your scuba trip. I'm from Guam right out among those islands you were choosing from...you probably flew through Guam to get there. My guess is Palau.
