LB 2006 was my first triathlon, and I just signed up for 2007.

Anybody else?

I thought it was a great first-timer's race.  Pretty well organized and not a very intimidating course.  Virtually no surf, only real hill on the bike course is over the Queensway bridge, and the run is a dead flat out-and-back.  It's worth taking a drive around the bike course beforehand if you get a chance.  It is kind of a long way up the beach to the transition area after the swim, but not too bad.

Also, think about coming up to the LA Triathlon two weeks before.  You can learn a ton watching the start, transition, etc.  Highly recommend volunteering, as that will get you the "insider view."  http://www.latriathlon.com/Volunteer.html

This will also be my first. I'm pretty nervous. The swim should be a piece of cake. I'm ready for the bike, although I'm nervous about the Queensway Bridge. Going to go ride it tomorrow and see how bad it is. The run would be fine, if my shins didn't keep freaking out on me. It's an easy course that I have walked and biked a lot, but I probably won't be able to run it all with my shin problems.

I wish I was confident about the swim. I swim like a drowning dog. I just hope I don't get dragged out of the water. The bike and run aren't really a worry for me. I cycle 4-5 times a week.

Don't worry too much about the bridge, it's not that steep, and a very small portion of the course overall.   And you get just as much downhill as uphill.

Thanks for that. It should be okay. I can probably spin up it. I meant to get over there today, but with 94 degree weather...NO WAY!

Does anyone know what is up with trying to confirm entry? It says to wait until six weeks before and it's um...9 days before. Strange.

I have never worn a wetsuit for an open water swim...because I have done very few of them, is one really needed for this triathlon??? The water Temp is 59-64 degrees. That seems a little chilly.

I did an half mile OW swim race in Long Beach in early July down the beach. I just wore a racing suit and was fine. It was chilly getting in for warmup, but I didn't even notice the cold during the race. Plus, it's warmer now then it was then. I think you'll be fine in just a swimsuit.

Yeah, they have been running a bit behind on that this year.  They do say that if you registered through Active.com and got a confirmation from that you're good to go, but it would be nice to have confirmation from them directly.

Last year they emailed out a couple of competitor updates the week before the race as well, so hopefully we'll see something before Saturday...

Still nothing updated on the website, and I think if I were a first-timer I'd be getting a bit nervous about that.

Having done the race last year and worked with the Pacific Sports people twice as a volunteer, I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt--I'm confident that everything will go just fine.

As a first-timer...I am nervous. I've been training a year for this damn race, so I was hoping for an update. The info all seems like its from 2006. What's up with that???

Confirmation list link is up, and this year's wave start schedule went up today.

There was a Competitor Update that came out today via email but isn't posted on the website.  Let me know if you didn't get it and I'll post the text.

Otherwise, relax, show up at the Expo at the Queen Mary on Saturday to get your packet and you'll be all set.  They'll probably also do a race briefing at the Expo, definitely attend that if you can.

Yep, I got the update. I'm just on edge...first race and all. I feel undertrained a tad and nervous. Though, at times I feel fired up and ready to go. Hope that feeling wins out on Sunday morning!

Funny.  I remember feeling just about exactly the same way last year.  Got through it fine, wound up feeling like I could have gone harder, but learned a lot too.  I think especially for the first one, finishing is the main thing.

Since you did this last year, how bad are the hills over the Queensway Bay Bridge? I meant to get over there ahead of time to ride them, but never had the chance. I'm worried about them being deceptively steep.

I've been sidelined this week with a super nasty cold, but I'm really hoping to get over it by this weekend so I can do this race! Hope I'm breathing well enough this weekend to see y'all out there...

They're not horribly steep, and also not horribly long, I think the uphill portion in total is probably between .25 & .5 mi.  I ride the San Gabriel bike path quite a bit, and don't think the bridge is much steeper at the steepest section than the average road underpass on the bike trail, if you're familiar with those.  As I recall, I was able to stay seated most of the way up, just went to a low gear.  It also starts fairly shallow and ramps up, so you should have plenty of time to downshift after you make the right turn off of Shoreline.

It's also two loops of the same course, so just be conservative on the first loop, and figure out how hard you can hammer it on the second.

By the way, you'll have to drive over the bridge on your way to the Expo on Saturday, so you'll see for yourself.  And again, make sure you stick around at the Expo for the course briefing.

Well, I just got back from the Expo. I drove the bike route again and feel better about the bridge. At least there are several miles of getting up to speed before it. My only bike worry is that there is an uphill right out of T1. That should be interesting.

Actually, my big concern is water quality. With all the rain there is a chance of closing the swim. That would suck. It's the only sport of the three that I'm remotely fast at. But, I have no control, so I'll just go with it.

Katrina, I hope you're feeling better for race day. Are you racing Athena too? If so, I'll see ya out there in our lovely hot pink caps!

Good luck everyone!

I won't be there . My cough is really nasty, and at my team workout this morning, my coaches both advised me to take this weekend off and focus on our race next weekend.

Good luck to everyone! Have fun!

Great Race Report and congratulations on your first Tri !!!

It was my first as well and I was wondering where you got your split times for the race? I know my overall time from my own watch, but I don't have the splits and I am dying to find out what they were.
