Subject: First 1/2 training question
I'm on an endurance roll...I did a marathon last year, a sprint tri in July this year and just completed an olympic in August. I have definitely caught the tri bug and now I want to try a HIM! (Um, in 2008, of course. Let's not be silly here). I don't know what HIM to do yet (I live in NJ, something in the northeast, I guess).

So two questions: I was thinking of doing another olympic tri in late spring '08 as part of my conditioning (in addition to training, of course) and then do the HIM sometime in summer...does that sound like a good idea? Does anyone else do that, or do you just train for the HIM, no other races?

Also, I used BT's 16 week training schedule for the olympic and it worked out really well for me. I figure I'll use the training schedule for the HIM on here as well. Unless anyone has any other suggestions...?

Thanks for all the help, I seriously could not have done my tri's without the awesome athletes on this site!!

I am new to tri too, and I just signed up for the Newfoundland Half Marathon. They have very generous cutoff times, and I may need them! I am slooooowwwww! I was also looking into the Musselman Half in upstate NY, which is supposed to be great!

Timberman in NH is a great half. It was August 19 this year, so should be about the same time last year. And, yes, you can do a late-sprint Oly no problem. I did an Oly, which I tapered for and allowed recovery, 7 weeks out from my HIM. No worries at all. I did a sprint and du prior to the Oly.

Cool, I might check that out...how does registration for these HIMs work? I've been reading the sites for a while, but am all confused by the reserved slots thing...do you have to qualify or something?

You can use other races as part of your training. It's a good way to practice your race prep and mental training.

I'm doing a HIM in October, and have an Oly planned for this weekend. I just look at is as a high intensity workout in preparation for the HIM.

Plus, if you don't do any races while your preping for your 'A' race, you lose out on the fun of competition.

Patriot HIM in Massachusetts is also really nice (its the first weekend in July). Rolling course, no major hills on the bike or run and really well managed.

I just got back into Tri's after a 16 year layoff and will have a total of 2 Oly's, 3 sprints, and a half mary, done by the end of October. I'm looking at HIM's for 2008 too. This is the plan on hoping to carry out to prepare for the 70.3 distance.

I plan on doing a Half IM in early June, as I did the sprint on the same course last year and know it's pretty much flat as a pancake. I'll plan on making it an Aquabike, and do the swim and ride, then see how things are going and do at least part of the run (it's a loop setup which will make not finishing and walking back to the transition an easy thing to do if I'm to pooped out, but hopefully I can at least finish even if I'm walking quite a bit of the run)

My A race is scheduled for the second weekend of Sept, as I'm off for that weekend and there's a race in Ontario and another in Illinois I'm considering.

Between June and Sept I'll fit in a couple of sprints and Oly's just to keep the juices flowing and get some races in for practice.

I've used the Oly program and have been happy with it, hopefully the results will show up on race day in two and a half weeks.

I found another HIM 20 week program over at http://www.trifuel.com/training/training-programs
Its not as detailed as BT's, but is an option.

Good luck

you plan sounds good and definitely consider Mooseman, Patriot, Timberman for your 1st HIM. All 3 are great races!

Look no further than Timberman. It can't be beat. I see your from Clifton. The sprint in Wyckoff in mid June is a great race.  Tougher and a little earlier is the Mini at Harriman, NY. Essentially an Oly. Finally, Trifuel.com has a great HIM training plan if you  want an alternative.

No - the only half that you have to "qualify" for is the 70.3 championship in Clearwater. As far as I know, all the rest are the same as any other race, you just sign up. Be aware that some races fill up well before race day - Timberman comes to mind - registration opens October 1st and it will likely be full by the end of December or early January.

Another option is the Tinman in Tupper Lake, NY ...part of the Adirondacks..it's towards the end of June every year.

Thanks Bones, I will check it out. My plan is to do my first Half in 2008, so I am looking around for a plan that makes sense for me.
