Sunny
Total Time = 1h 09m 31s
Overall Rank = 49/368
Age Group = M30-39
Age Group Rank = 27/114
Pre-race routine:

Slept surprisingly well. Had toast, tea and a banana for breakfast. Rode my bike to the race signed in and setup transition area. Then waited for about 1.5 hours as this event has a TT style start with each competitor going of at 15 seconds interval. I had start no 315, so I had to wait a while. Sipped on a bottle of SIS GO as I waited & warmed up.
Event warmup:

Went for a 10 minute jog and then did the upper body warmup I used to do when I was a competitive swimmer.
Swim
  • 06m 17s
  • 466 yards
  • 01m 21s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim went quite well considering the pretty much non existent training. Arms were tired at the end, but then they would be wouldn't they.
What would you do differently?:

Train.
Transition 1
  • 02m
Comments:

Short slippery run from pool. I decided to go with socks again as my running shoes give me blisters if I don't, so that took a little time. Then there's another short slippery run before the bike timing start.
What would you do differently?:

Get some running shoes that don't give me blisters and go sock less.
Bike
  • 37m 4s
  • 13.05 miles
  • 21.12 mile/hr
Comments:

This was fun. In a painful kind of way. I felt great on the bike and actually overtook some other fast looking people. Managed to stay on the aerobars the whole way apart from on the 2 roundabouts at either end of the route. I think only 2 guys overtook me and one of them is the guy who has the course record. Got slowed down a couple of times due to traffic, but nothing major. At about mile 9 I was suffering, but saw on the computer that 21 mph was on, so I sucked it up and put my head down.
What would you do differently?:

On the day. Nothing. But obviously more training to go faster.
Transition 2
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

My racking point was quite far from the T2 entrance/exit. Apart from that it was all good.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 23m 2s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

Well after rocking the bike, I should have known this would be ugly. Just ground it out and tried to stick with some of the people who overtook me. This was all about contained suffering. The highlight of the run was seeing Sandra & Jasper cheering me on. Jasper was very exited to see Daddy racing and Sandra was proud of her sweaty husband.

And it also turned out to be a 5K PB.
What would you do differently?:

Run, run, run. I also need to do some more speed workouts as I'm not comfortable at race speed. Plenty of stamina just no speed.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking a mile back to transition and a few stretches.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training and not enough speed workouts on the run.

Event comments:

Once again a great race. They've been putting it on for years and it shows. It is a very slick but still friendly event.
