As I sit here at 6:20am, I can't help but think that two months ago, I'd already be well in to my "short ride". There's just not enough time in the mornings to ride anymore since it's already staying darker so much later in the morning. I used to be able to leave the house at 5:45 or so, but now I wouldn't think of leaving before 6:30. Before then it's just too dark and foggy. That gives me just about enough time to ride a mere 8 miles or so before being in the shower by 7. DANG this impending daylight shortage!!!

Yeah, I'm starting to morn the loss of Summer's too.  I love the Fall weather, but those long Summer days sure are fantastic.

Last year I bought a serious head light for my bike so that I could ride in early AM and later into the evening.

Well, I leave for work at 5:40, so I never get pre-work riding in. But, I do miss my early Saturday rides. I rode this weekend and couldn't leave until 6:30, and even then it was still somewhat murky out there. *sigh*

Last week I went riding and ran out of daylight at 7:45 and had to cut my ride short. Ah the days of trainer rides are coming.

Can you ride during lunch? I used to have a 45' loop I could do a few times a month and it was the best lunch I ever had. I always feel that when I get to ride I was lucky and rode during lunch all winter....my coworkers thought I was nuts but I loved it.

Tell me about it. I hear my trainer calling my name, but I'm ignoring it for now .

I wish I could ride during lunch, but working in the city pretty much dashed those hopes. Losing the mornings hurts. I'm full time triathlete from 5:30 - 7am, full time worker from 8 - 4, full time father from 4 - 8:30, then full time husband from there. This darkness thing is seriously cutting in to Tri time! At least I can still run, but if you read my other post "2nd time in 2 weeks - thoughts?", that's made the darkness just that much more dangerous!

I'm very sad too, esp. since I'm a new cyclist and need the practice! Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons (because I have to get up very early for church, as I sing in the choir and there's not enough daylight early enough) will become my only times to ride outside. I can't ride during lunch either because I work in a very busy area that is just not safe to ride a bike in. (esp. because drivers in NoVA are morons). I just got a good discount on a reasonably priced trainer, which I will be setting up in our downstairs den so I don't drive my roommates crazy. I would consider riding when it's dark if I didn't live in the DC burbs - too much traffic and I don't feel safe, even though NoVA is fairly safe. But I wouldn't chance riding along even the W&OD in the dark.

Agreed. I was just ranting about the shortening days in my blog. Further north up here, we get barely 8hrs of daylight through the winter.

Sadly, I'm thinking that I'll have to get my trainer/treadmill area set up in the basement soon.

(PS: It's good to hear that those out on the roads at dusk, dawn or darkness are keeping safety in mind with reflectors and lights.)

I won't ride in the wet or cold as of yet, so my riding days will be ending soon for the year. I have a fluid trainer & a membership to the YMCA that will have to get me through this rainy season. I will spend more time focusing on my swimming & running, & try to develop a weight training program.

Perhaps next year I can figure out a comfortable means to ride in less than perfect weather, but at this point I don't want to spend the money.

I was thinking the same thing last week when I was riding at night.  I know in a few months it will be too dark to ride without lights, etc. and I am not willing to do that.  Fortunately I live in a great climate without bad weather but I can't do anything about the light.   I guess I will be on my trainer alot.

Yeah, mine has been begging me to come play too... Oh how I despise the trainer. Unfortunately it works better than a Spinner bike, at least to tell my progress.
