Subject: clock time for interval workouts

I can't decide if it makes more sense to leave the watch running for interval workouts or not - does anyone have thoughts on this?

It seems pretty trivial since I guess all it affects is the training log, but at the same time, the minutes add up over the course of a season and it doesn't make sense to have a lot of stuff inconsistently logged.  I'm going back and forth on this so have a lot of inconsistent paces logged, plus a lot of minutes logged as running/swimming that were really just stand around and recover time.

Currently here's what I'm doing -
1. long run with walk, water, and stoplight breaks -- who cares, keep the clock running
2. interval swim or track workouts with short breaks (<30sec) -- who cares, keep the clock running
3. interval swim or track workouts with longer breaks (>1min) -- stop/start the clock

OK, with running intervals, I assume your recovery period is being done over a set distance.  Either way, I would probably time the rest interval just to make sure I'm not going too slow or too fast over that distance, and maintaining a consistent rest.

Make sense?

Doesn't your watch have a lap button? First lap WU, 2nd lap interval, 3rd lap recovery, 4th lap interval, etc.

Not sure about swimming, but the running intervals I've done didn't involve standing around during recovery.

Right, I'm timing the rests but was mostly curious how to log it so the training data makes more sense over time.

For example when I'm logging a track workout that lasted 60 minutes on the clock but had ten 30-second rests, do I go ahead and log it as 60 minutes (so the pace gets reported slower and I end up logging more time than I actually ran) - or log it as the 55 that I actually ran?

It's easier just logging it as 60, but the pace gets so skewed and so does the total run/bike/swim minutes over the course of a whole season etc, so I was wondering if it's worth excluding the rests. I'm way too newbie to be getting this nitpicky, but just curious.

I think you're overanalyzing it.

I would log the total time, including rests, and record the details for each split in the notes section.

Agreed about the overanalyzing - probably never should have just gotten a dang HRM last week - but I'll follow that tip - thanks for the help!

Interesting, thanks. I guess this all came about because I did a long swim the other day with a lot of short sets, and I wanted to log the total time and not bother detailing all the little 30 second rests and stuff. I guess there's still no reason to, but I'll just have the total time include the rests and not worry about it.

Basically if I'm moving, I'm recording the time and will log it. However, if I'm standing around, like at the end of the lane at the pool, I'll stop my watch and start it again when I start swimming.

For running intervals, you should have active recovery so you are jogging or at least walking between intervals. If this is not possible you are either going too fast for the interval or you need to focus on continuing to build an aerobic base and not worry about track work for now.

I log my splits for intervals and recovery intervals (walked, stopped or jogged). The GPS tracks it all so I log the grand total distance and time of the whole workout.

Seeing the formats is helpful; thanks for the examples. Now if I can just remember what swimming lap I'm on..

i log my total time in the workout..don't care about rest intervals...swimming is the only time that i have true "rest" recovery.

in my  log, on days when i do intervals like that, i don't auto calculate
