Pre-race routine:

Training has been sub-par for the last month. Spent the days before the event entertaining house guests.

Took a very stress free approach to this event. Idea was to have fun and enjoy the day.
Event warmup:

5 minute run and 5 minute swim.
Swim
  • 15m 18s
  • 800 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

Plan was for relaxed and smooth. I used bilateral breathing the whole way, which I haven't been doing since I usually try to go out too fast. I was ecstatic with my time. About 2 minutes faster than last year. But, wait...I don't think this was necessarily the same distance as last year. I have adjusted the distance to 800 yards.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I'm going to really hit the swim hard this winter.
Transition 1
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

Good transition
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 47m 23s
  • 17.35 miles
  • 21.97 mile/hr
Comments:

I started out the bike slow and in control. Well, maybe not slow, but I allowed my legs to ease into it. This seemed to be a good approach, as I got my breathing under control. After being passed in the first 2 miles by a few riders, I was then able to hang within good distance of these riders. In the end, we ended up jockeying positions way too much. I would pass a lot of them on the uphills, and they would catch me on the down. Some riders really need some training in etiquette, as I would try to pass on the left and announce I was coming, but they wouldn't move over. At times, I felt like they thought it should be a peleton. I stayed out of the fray and made sure I didn't get caught up in the action. Turned out to be a good idea, as about 3 of them layed their bikes down at the dismount line.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 2
  • 00m 40s
Comments:

Steady
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 25m 16s
  • 3.8 miles
  • 06m 39s  min/mile
Comments:

I was pretty beat. Mile markers were off. Just tried to keep the legs moving and pick off as many people in my wave as I could.
What would you do differently?:

Run training has fallen off a bit. I will be hitting the intervals/switching up my training for next year.
Post race
Warm down:

None. I just had fun talking with people. Ran into 2 friends from college that I haven't seen for about 12 years.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training was off a bit.

Event comments:

I really like this race and venue. I will be back again next year!

Jon,

You had a great year. You had a few bike segments in excess of 22 mph. Your swimming has really come around. And your running was my envy during the middle of the summer.

I think that you have focus for next year. The long stuff is probably out of our reach due to more important committments, but with the right training, I think you could really tear up the short stuff. I am glad that I am exiting the 35-39 AG next year. Chip is certainly a better athlete than I. If he decides to play the game of bonus races, he will be the one to beat. You won't be far behind and may have the opportunity to catch him.

We should discuss some training stuff in the next couple of months.

great race Jon!  the last few races of the season always seem to be hard to train properly for, but you still managed a wonderful time...good luck at Square Lake!
