Part of me doesn't want to replace it because the next one is just a ring.  It's not THAT ring.  Does that make sense?

I feel the same way. I have scoured the internet and found one that looks like it, but it still isn't the same. I literally took if off 1 x in the past 9 1/2 years, when I was digging to replace sprinkler heads in my yard. Really bad luck, and really stupid to swim with it on. Needless to say, the wife isn't really happy with me right now.

Mine is so loose now that I have to take it off when I'm training. I don't even like to take it into the pool.

Sorry about you loss. Looks like it has happened to quite a few.

We have matching rings that were custom made from a design my wife created. I lost it swimming at the Y, but it was found.

Now it stays in the locker when I'm training in the pool and when I race it goes on my watch band.

I once lost my wedding ring in Vegas. Thankfully I found it again right before I walked in the door. Whew. Close one.

Honestly sorry about your ring -- during a tri last year in Iowa I was swimming along, slowly as I do, and felt something touching my fingertips. Yep, it was my ring about to slide off. As any good triathlete would do I just kept swimming, fenagling it back down and curling my finger so it wouldn't fall off. Why lose MORE time in my already-slow swim?

There are worse things that can happen with your ring...

My husband's ring misadventures include the following (and these are just the things I know about):

1. He sheetrocked it inside a wall once. He was framing and took the ring off and put it on something in the wall, and then sheetrocked right over it. Luckily he remembered right where he'd put it, was able to just cut out a small hole and then mud/tape over the seams.

2. He's a mechanic, and happened to be wearing his ring once while working and completed an electrical circuit with it (accidentally, of course... his hand slipped). He burned a 3 mm chunk out of the band itself and had 2nd and 3rd degree burns around his finger. He had to be treated at the burn unit because with complete peripheral burns like that, there are issues with the scar tissue tightening up and impeding blood flow into the finger.

Needless to say, he doesn't wear his ring anymore. It sits in the jewelry box at home. He's got a "ring tatoo" from the scarring anyway.

I lost my ring in a lake once, too - while waterskiing. We did replace it (and I got a slightly bigger diamond the second time, so I didn't mind!) I don't wear jewelry during athletics anymore; I'll often put my wedding ring onto my keyring so I don't lose it, as I usually don't think to remove it until I'm actually there.

Sorry about your ring... I know that all the stories in the world don't take away that sinking feeling.

This thread is a good reminder to take it off while swimming, which I've not done yet.

But I should... I am 40 pounds lighter than when I got married... lots of times now, when I wash my hands, and I kind of flick the excess water off... my ring flies off, about 1/2 the time.

wow - sorry about your rings.

We had ours poured together out of gold from my husband's country.    I would die if I lost the wedding band.  the diamond I wear is family peice from my mother's side - again, I would die.   I take them off to swim in at the pool.  I did race with my wedding band on, but will probably not do that ever again.

My husband ALWAYS comments when I take mine off for every race and workout.  Of course he is the one that sent me the thread to read today!!!

That sucks!  Sorry.  Tough lesson to learn, but a good reminder.

I try to leave the rings at home as much as possible.  I used to leave them in the gym locker, but nearly left them behind once.  If I drive to the gym, I leave them in the car.   When I work out after work, I put them in my purse.  Although I have freaked out a few times as I'm walking down the street post-workout, fishing for my buspass, and nearing flinging a ring out.  Oops!  Need to put them back on before leaving the locker room.

But, to actually add something useful here....

We were able to cover my rings under our homeowners insurance, and previously under renters insurance.  The trick is that you need to provide your insurance company with the appraisal prior to the loss and you might have to pay a bit extra, depending on the appraisal.  It's not usually automatically covered for an expensive ring(s).  Of course this doesn't replace the sentimental value.  I'm in the "we're married, this is just jewelry" boat though.  I would be thrilled to lose my engagement ring so I could get something sparklier

I have 2 rings - my good ring and a band that we picked up for $80...I can wear my band just to show I am married - and my other one to go out for good. We had first purchased the band because I was getting too heavy to fit into my good ring - but now that I can wear that ring again - I use the one for when I wear silver jewelry & when I exercise- and the other for when I am wearing gold jewelry. If I loose the band - we aren't out that much money.

If I lost my wedding band I wouldn't replace it, I'd replace my wife!

Kidding, Kidding.

I like the idea of a ring tattoo! Can't take it off, it's permanent - like what your marriage should be.

Ouch, but far easier to explain than some other ways people have lost wedding rings.

I lost mine on a family vacation (wife was with me).  Went without (a ring) for 3-4 years before replacing it.

I take it off a lot.  I'm not allowed to wear it in the labs or most worksites.  I don't wear it camping, training, or doing yardwork or home repair type things.  Now that I've lost weight, it's pretty loose.  At home, it stays on my dresser when I'm not wearing it.  I've got a big safety pin (like from a Y to identify laundry) on my keyring and my band goes there if I take it off.

Mine went to the bottom of Boerne Lake during a triathlon last month.  My wife couldn't get too upset, though, since she lost hers a couple of years ago under suspicious circumstances (ie, night out with girlfriends).

Sorry about all the lost rings, but this thread is hilarious.

I put my too flip-flops at the end of my lane with the number of tiles x 100 yards I plan to swim.  In other words, if I'm swimming 2000 yards, I'll put my shoes 20 tiles apart.  I then move my ring to the next tile after each 100, since I SUCK at counting laps.

Haven't lost it yet... maybe I should be more careful, since...  I don't know... a water bottle cap would be just as effective!

never lost mine, but when I run, especially in the heat, my fingers swell up like little sausages so I take it off because it gets too tight.  If I am racing and Steve is not, I have him put it on the chain he wears around his neck.

I lost mine swimming in Lake Lanier a few years ago. Luckily, I had two things going for me, so I'm still married:

1. The reason I lost it was because I had lost so much weight since getting married. When I got the new one, it was 1.5 sizes smaller than the one I lost. Jen would happily trade the 'new Josh' for the ring again and again.

2. I was about ten feet away from her at the time. Not only did she see me lose it (so know that it wasn't on the golf course or at a bar), but she saw the stricken look on my face.

That said, she still says that if I lose another, I'm going to the $5 rings they sell at street fairs.
