I'll admit that swimming in the Willamette isn't the most appealing thought, but I couldn't pass up doing a downtown race. Anyone else?

Oops.  Was using Safari & I guess it didn't work...

I wanted to do Portland but couldn't do a Sunday race, so I settled for the Scoggins Valley Oly instead.  I used to live in Portland so would've loved to race there.

Good luck!

We went and cheered!! Looked like a fun race, and some of those swimmers were smokin' fast! Wow!

As a City worker I would like to apologize for the sewage that got dumped Friday. My division had nothing to do with it at all, but still. I'm embarrassed that the city did that.

How did the race go? It looked like so much fun from my bike marshall post. I too was impressed with the swim. I'll definitely do it next year (pending sewage dumping - I swallow a lot of water when I swim!)

My performance was a little lackluster, but the race went well. Very well organized. I hope the city gets behind this event and allows for more road access in the future. The six loops on Naito/Front was far from ideal. Too congested, too many turns, and some very rough patches south of the transition area.

Close to a week later and I haven't been violently ill or found any growths, so I think it's fair to say the swim was safe despite the unplanned sewage dump.

I don't plan to do Portland but I do plan to do 3 or 4 in the area.  I kayak the Williamette in the summer and the thought of swimming in it is not at all appealing.

I did the Portland tri this year. I raced the sprint to see if I could sneak into Nationals -  I did: 1st in my age group. The fact that I finished 9th overall was the surprise of the day for me. I think anyone with experience did the oly. This was the first year of the sprint so not many people may have known about the sprint. I thought it was a very good course. If I did it in 2009, I think I'd do the Oly

USAT just announced that the Portland Tri will be an official Regional Qualifier for Age Group Nationals. I just might have to add that to my calendar. Don't have to win your age group. The top 33% of the age group qualifies. Of course there is the issue of getting to Nationals.

Alabama . . . yuk.

I have thought about doing the Portland Tri, but 2009 being my first tri season, coupled with my crap arse running skillz and slow arse biking up hills, I might pass for a more pancake like course. The sprint course is a possibility though, or maybe doing swim in a relay.

Anyone have any good recs for good beginners tris in pdx area? I want to do 3 sprints, and an olympic next season.

If you are looking for a flat bike course Portland tri is probably not the best. The sprint is 2 laps and the oly 3 and there is some climbing. On the other hand the run course is flat except one approach to a bridge.

I have not done many tris but I did do the Albany sprint just for the heck of it - just showed up to see what a tri was about. The swim was 750 meters in a 50 meter pool (good for me) and both the bike and run was FLAT.  There are a number of spring sprint tris in pdx area. Maybe someone else knows more. Looking at the map, Blue Lake tri looks flat. I suspect Canby might be flat (I think it sells out in January). Hawthorne Farm is another popular one that seems to sell out.

Many of the race sites have course descriptions that might help.

Here is a partial list of races out there

05/03/09 Hawthorne Farm (Sprint)

05/09/09 Canby (Sprint)

05/25/09 Heart of the Valley - Corvallis (Sprint)

06/13/09 Blue Lake (S & O)

06/26/09 Pacific Crest (HIM)

06/27/09 Pacific Crest (S&O)

07/11/09 Hagg Lake (S & O)

07/18-19/09 Deschutes (S & O)

08/02/09 Midsumer (S & O)

08/17/08 HulaMan (HIM)

08/23/09 Portland (S&O)

08/30/08 Scroggins Valley (S & O)

09/13/08 Black Diamond WA (S, O & HIM)

09/19/09 Grand Columbian (S, O & HIM)

Blue Lake & Midsummer are indeed pancake flat.
Lebanon & Albany, also flat.
Hagg Lake (and Scoggins Valley, if it's in the same spot?) is fairly hilly.
Heart of the Valley (Corvallis) is pretty darned hilly for a sprint.

Duck Bill Thrill (oly) May 24th I think...has some hillage but the scenery is outstanding!

Even though the original post is like 2 years old.... I'm going to do the Portland Tri! My first ever tri will be the Blue Lake Triathlon and then the Portland tri later this summer. Hope to see some of you out there!

Good luck to both of you.  If you hadn't heard, there is a swim practice on the course every thursday evening. I think it starts at 5 (possibly 6??)pm. The website may have more info.

Yep.  Meet at 6pm.  I've been going out the past few weeks, even though I'm not sure if I will do the Portland Tri this year or not (its the weekend of the Adult Soapbox Derby, and I have to say that in this case a little ridiculous summer fun might out way my desire to race).  There is a pretty large group of people who have been showing up to swim on Thursday evenings, some clearly very advanced and some totally beginners, and everything in between.  I've actually enjoyed swimming in the Willamette too, and it really isn't any worse than any of the other open water spots around Portland.  Just remember to plan for the current on the way back of the route for your first time out.

Hey Nat,
I see that you are doing the Xterra.  That tells me that you are one tough girl.  I think that you should have no problem in doing the Portland Oly.  Good luck with both.
