SEPTEMBER Swim & Bike Challenge
East vs Central vs West teams (and maybe a ROW [Rest of World] team)
Rules / Guidelines

     This is a challenge to promote the attainment of a specific swim / bike goal, i.e get better, faster, stronger!
  • PLEASE announce your participation in this thread by September 7th and state your swim / bike goals for the month of September.  Formats are minutes/hours for Time or km/miles, meters/yards for Distance, and you can have a mix of either (e.g. swim=distance, bike=time). Any metric distance will be converted to yards/miles for the spreadsheet.
  • SWIM: Pool swims, drills, races and open water swimming apply toward goal attainment. Kick board, paddles and/or fin drills – they all apply. Open water swims should be measured by a GPS type of device, Goggle Earth methods (BT route tracker), or by a sponsoring swim race. Or eyeball and just be fair about it.
  • BIKE: Biking on trainers, stationary bikes, Spin classes, MTB, etc… all apply toward goal attainment. Unless there is a distance measuring devise attached, this is where a time base goal comes in handy if you do a lot of these.
  • INJURIES & ILLNESSES: They do happen, if you are injured or contact a severe illness before the end of week #3 you can apply for a goal amendment, but the injury/illness must reported in your blogs and a doc note sent to me (just kidding ). I am allowing up to 120% of Individual % to be had be so this can offset any late injury/illness that may occur and to hopefully provide an incentive to push yourself.
  • GOAL ESTIMATIONS: Take into account things that happen in our lives.  I know it is very difficult to obtain 100% of a training plan totals, BTDT.  If you don't have a structured plan I recommend that you find one that fits your abilities.  Take anywhere from 75% to 90% of it as your goals.  If you reach your goals by by week 2 you'll have to update your goals.  If you reach by week 3 you may update if you wish.
  • DROPPED PLAYER: Doesn't happen all that often but if a player request to be dropped due to personal reasons, each case will be reviewed and determined if the players goals stay as they are or not.
  • SPREADSHEET: I will take care of the spreadsheet unless the participant list reaches over 30 or so and I will request each team to have a captain to update the teams spreadsheet. Each team will have to pick a Captain and the Captain is responsible for collecting the weekly swim / run distance totals from their team members, and reporting said distances on this thread.
  • BLOGS; Participants must blog their swim and Bike training and have their blogs public. If it’s not blogged, it didn’t happen for the purpose of this Challenge.
  • WEEKS; For collecting weekly totals, Since September 30th is on a Sunday, the "weeks" are Monday through Sunday, except week #1 (see below), please report your weekend training asap on Monday's. There will be 4 weeks in this challenge; Week #1 is 9/1 to 9/9, week#2 is 9/10 to 9/16, week#3 is 9/17 to 9/23 and week #4 is 9/24 to 9/30.
  • FUN: Have fun and enjoy getting in better shape for your Fall Tri's/Aqua-Bike events.

Determining Winning The Team

     Calculations will be a combination of & of team members who reached their goal + final percentage of aggregate team goal attainment. In this way, both individual goal attainment and team effort carry weight and it also levels the playing field for teams with fewer team members. It will work like this:

  • Calculate the percentage of team members who reached their Individual goals (up to 120% allowed).
  • Calculate the aggregated team goal attainment average.
  • Average these 2 numbers. The team with the highest average of these two numbers wins.

You will get a "trophy"!

Terms for Losing Teams

Losing team members just get nothing but a better bod!

Other not so legal binding stuff:

  • Smack talking is not mandatory but certainly makes things a little more interesting & fun.
  • Please don’t take the smack talking personal. If you find yourself feeling like you’ve been slighted, have a cookie then post a comeback or just say something like “You’re a booger ha!” You’ll get cheers for being a good sport. Or go for a swim and cool off.
  • As with all challenges, this is an honor system, self-reporting blog challenge.

The ultimate goal is for you to meet your goal and improve your swimming and Biking skills. Let' shave some fun and improve our bod's for health and any races you may have upcoming!

OK, I punched all the numbers and came up with the following for my goals:

  • Swim = 12,000 yards
  • bike = 250 miles

I'm on the East Coast so EAST it is (EAST Coast rocks the most!)

Right now I'm using Central and Mountain time zones as "Central", that may change to just Central and move Mountain TZ over with the West TZ depending on how many signup.

Hazmaster - Bike = 31,678,000 inches (500 miles)

                  - Swim = 1,900,000 CM (19,000 Meters)

I like the larger numbers in smaller units, it makes me look even more hard core! Let's get serious West Coast and show the East Coast why they're not allowed amongst the good looking people!

CAUTION: NEWBIE ALERT! Well gee. I just figured out how to access my blog. (I've been using the training log calendar. But I just figured out that it's connected to the blog. Who knew.... )

Anyway....

EAST TEAM! (I'm in North Carolina.)

Swim: 23,000 yards. (I'll try!)

Bike: 175 miles. (All on a stationary bike. Here's to hoping that my knee holds up.)

Ok 1st victim for the rest of the world team ...

September's goals are 250 miles on the bike and 20 000 metres in the water, that should keep me out of mischief!

Starting Sunday with an olympic distance race and swimming in the sea, brrrr!

(quick edit, is the blog the same thing as the training log, and can anyone see mine? or should I be instantly disqualified for asking stupid questions?)

This is perfect timing for me, as I am starting to follow a plan starting tomorrow. I'm in Central (Wisconsin), and going to do time for the bike, since that is how my plan breaks it down:

I'm a newbie, and so far no one has disqualified me. So you're probably ok too.

I found the blog by accident. Go to your training log calendar and click on a day. On that screen, you'll see "Save and return to:" followed by a list of choices. Click Blog.

I think that's what they're going to look at. When you complete the Training Log (via the calendar), it automatically fills out the blog for you.

This being a Holiday weekend, the only day I can swim is today (Saturday). The pool is closed tomorrow and Monday.

So I got in the pool, HOPING to do 1000 yards.

And while I swam, I thought about this Challenge. And I said to myself, "I'd better swim HARD today, or I may not hit my goal."

End result: 1500 yards total.

Woohoo! This Challenge rocks!

I've logged the swim on my calendar. It looks very nice there on my blog.



I may be sore tonight and tomorrow, but since the pool is closed until Tuesday, no biggie.
