I've been a BT member for over a year and it never even occured to me there was a furum for those of us doing a race...what a dork I am!  Anyway, I'm registered for this one as well.  It's my last race for the season and then it's time to train for a half mary.

As for the discussion about wet-suits.  I don't really like them, but I hate being cold more, so I'll have mine with me.

I'm recovering from a recent illness and have to withdraw from this
event. After three weeks of feeling like c**p, unable to prepare, and
starting to feel like I was "de-training", I was already thinking I'd
have to pass this one up. But when my doctor ordered no strenuous
physical activity for 2-4 weeks, the decision was made for me.

I am soooo bummed... I was really hoping to do one more tri this year and
maybe even run into some of you there. Winter maintenance here I
come...well, not just yet.

Good luck everyone! I hope it turns out to be a great event for you,
especially if it's your last one this season. Don't let the 3-eyed fish
get in your way!

I completed the Sandman and ended up renting a wetsuit so I will probably go that route again.   However I really don't feel that much difference in the two.

I know - I rented a wetsuit thinking the water wouldn't be 80 and would really like to not toss $35 down the drain. For the Luray tri (also run by set-up events), the lake was 82 the day before and "miraculously" overnight, it dropped to a wet-suit legal 76 degrees So we'll see. Plus, I think there is supposed to be rain over the next couple of days, like Thursday or something. So that could help. And if it would stop being freakin' 80 degrees everyday, because it's October...

I hear you about the money, but for me, it's not good because I have enough of a struggle getting through the swim with a wetsuit.  The thought of not wearing it makes me panicky, and it is only Wednesday!

How about meeting before the race for a group BT picture?  it would be nice to meet you all and maybe we can help calm any nerves that need calming

I wouldn't mind saying hello. I have no idea what the set-up is like down there, and I certainly can't get off work on Friday to drive the hour and a half each way to check it out. (I am thinking now that I should have planned farther in advance to take the whole day off, and make a day of it to swim and (slowly) bike the course.) I'm probably gonna get there around 8 am. We have MORE than enough time getting there an hour and a half early to Luray. Thoughts as to where and when? I'll have a friend in tow who can take pics.

Our tri club is going to have a booth of some sort there.  I need to find out if it will be set up before the race or just after, but that might be a good place to meet.  Another would be near packet pick-up?

Packet pick up might work - I'd probably go get settled first after getting my packet, but it would work as a central meeting point. What tri-club do you belong to?

Our tri club is the Colonial Area Tri Club.  The CAT's for short.  We will have a tent set up and I think they will be setting it up Fri night. That would be a great place!!!  Come by and say hello.

I too dread the thought of a swim minus the wetsuit but I hope that they took the temperature mid-day and not when the race will actually start.

We can definitely meet at the Colonial Area Tri Club tent... it's a blue Coleman tent and we'll have our banner out, so we should be easy to identify. :-) See you all there!

even better, they took it in the early evening.  Setup did say on their website, "the evenings are cool so bring your wetsuits."

So it looks like yesterday afternoon they measured the water temp and it was 81 degrees. Said they'll measure it again this morning. WTF?!?!? It's OCTOBER!!!! Is anyone besides me getting really sick of 85-90 degree weather??? I like fall, and this blows...I'll probably still wear my wetsuit, assuming it is below 84, since there is no way in heck I am going to get a podium spot.

If it's that warm i will opt out of the wetsuit. I think for the shorter swims it takes me longer to get the darn thing on and off that it does to swim the distance. I like the warm weather, but man it's HOT not warm. Stop by the CAT tent and say HI!!!

FYI...

10/5/07 - Updated Giant Acorn Water Temperature - 78F
With a cool night and overcast skies, the water temperature at 9AM on Friday morning was 78F. Per USAT rules this is wetsuit legal. The call on wetsuit legality will be made Saturday morning by the head official.

Anyone else camping out there? It's $35 at the race site, which is about $30 too much for me I hope I can find a deserted area, I really don't feel like sleeping in my jeep...

In a word? Yes. I'm ready for sweaters, crisp air, fall colors, etc.

Good luck to everyone! Don't let the Giant Acorn or the mutant fish get you!

How far is Luray from the site? (I've been to Luray, but not to Fredericksburg) I'm coming from Arlington, basically, and I'm just getting up early and driving down - will probably get there at 8, which I think will be ample time. I felt like I stood around for a long time at the Luray race and we got there pretty early.

Not close enough for race day, I wouldn't think. I've never done it, but it's probably well over an hour by car. It's 75 miles as the crow flies and there's no good direct route.
