I just read the Everyman Triathlon blog and felt so sorry for the guy I wanted to share with you his story.

Exec summary: He won his age group/Clydesdale category at the Accenture Tri but was denied his medal because they say he didn't weigh in.

Here are the details:

Sucks, but maybe he screwed up??  If he was supposed to go somewhere and weigh in and did not that is is fault.  I agree though that he could have been treated better and not like a number.

It does suck that he was denied his win.  Maybe they need to make it more clear to the athena/clydesdale division that they need to weigh in if they choose to participate in that category.  Hopefully, it'll change in the future.

kproudfoot - 2007-08-31 2:09 PM Sucks, but maybe he screwed up??  If he was supposed to go somewhere and weigh in and did not that is is fault.  I agree though that he could have been treated better and not like a number.  There are rules to follow plain and simple.  It doesn't sound like he ever said he weighed in or not.

Read the blog, according to him, and he went into detail on it, he did go through the proper weigh-in at packet pickup. Makes sense that he wouldn't have received his packet without weighing in.

You'll note that they did not ask me if I weighed in (instead, they just assumed that I did not) because had they asked me I would have pointed out that I recall going to the special Team Clydesdale registration table.

I distinctly recall not being able to pick up my race day packet without 1) signing a waiver and 2) Stepping on the scale!

So...I waited for the big guy in front of me to get weighed in and stepped on the scale.

The women weighing me said that they would subtract two pounds from my weight for my clothing and jotted down my weight in an official looking note book.

This was my third time racing this event. I know the drill well.

So...I pointed this out to the mystery person who wrote me above and I've heard nothing back.

Zip...zero.

Regardless, looks like the promoter is going to make everything right for him.

If you read his previous entry he does attest to weighing in and even states that this is the third time he's done the event and knows the drill.

From his blog:

Sorry, I missed that he claims to have weighed in.  The blog ran togther and I could not tell who was saying what.  I thought I read from the race organizers that there was a different booth to weigh in at.  Just because it says he weighed in does not really mean he did, does it?  Just saying.  He might have been below the limit and was hoping noone would notice.

I'm sure he weighed in, what his weight is was never mentioned....but it's funny that in his blog telling about him driving to the event, that he admits to taking the wrong road and driving 2hrs before he even noticed.

This sucks, but I imagine he will get over it in a day or 2.   He knows how he performed and there is no money or reputation on the line here.   Not worth fighting over.

Uh, again, read the blog. He thought it was worth fighting over, and won. They're sending him his award.

I couldn't disagree more.  If he earned that award, he is due that award.  And if that award is what he has been training for this entire year, and this was his A race, and the event coordinator screwed up, you darn betcha it is worth fighting for.

This guy is sponsored so getting pictures of him on the podium is important for both him and the sponsors.  Given he said he was weighed in (I would tend to trust the athlete more in this regard as the expo check-in process can get crazy and things get lost, even with USAT sanctioning), he has every right to be mad- I would be too if a volunteer or race official screwed up my award placement.

well yeah, kind of, but since I have been coaching him for about 10 months and his BIGGEST goal of the year was to WIN the Clydes Division at MRS. T's it is a big deal for him and me. It could cost us millions in sponsorship.

Ok, but it sure looks to me like he's gotten a lot more publicity out of this now than he would have had he been on the podium. It seems to be all over the various tri forums.

yeah in Chicago you weigh in as you get your stuff. I can not see how they could screwed that up unless they forgot to write down your weight. not sure what would happen if you were under weight though. It would be the only thing is maybe he was under weight but I doubt it. It really does suck

My friend just had a mix up and missed her 3rd place a/g finish. she got it latter though so it worked out for her. Though someone else now thinks they got 3rd when they did not.
