Do most racers wear a one piece tri suit or separate tri shorts and jersey? I don't want to look like an idiot out there.

You'll probably see both options well represented at most races. I personally prefer tri shorts plus jersey, especially for longer races.

Hey, you're talking about a sport where you shamelessly sport spandex galore...no way to not look like an idiot!

Either way, skinsuit (one piece), or separates, wear what you're most comfortable with.

I ask, Bear, why stop there?  Go for broke, like "Retroman" (multiple-time finisher of IMLP) in his cut-off shorts, Chuck Taylors, and single-speed complete with Banana Seat!:

HA! This part part of that picture is retro man is in front of bling bling man, with his several thousand dollar tri bike with bladed wheels, etc. Looks like bling is about to pass retro but the fact that he IS in fact in front of him at that moment is great.

Honestly it is a matter off opinion but from what I have seen in the few small local races I have done 2 pieces outnumber 1 pieces.   I don't know the percentage but I have seen very few 1 piece suits.  That or I just don't pay attention like most people who will be at the race.  You could wear a speedo and you would not hear much (some snickering but not alot.)

I think 2 piece is always going to be more popular than 1, regardless what is better. Even in the world of Triathletes, where speedos and lycra cycle gear is a way of life, I think many feel odd in a 1 piece.

I have to step up to real gear next season and am not sure if I will go 1 or 2. I got some closeout tri shorts this summer that match nothing and wore a cycle jersey or no top on the bike.

I was curious on my first tri too, but in light of the pictures posted in this thread, someone will always be dressed worse than you!  Go with what you are comfortable training in.  Nothing new on race days goes for clothing as well.  If you have the physique for a trisuit and the cash ... then why not go for it.  I prefer the two piece myself ... gives me more flexibility on what to wear rather than being tied into just the trisuit.

I prefer racing in a one piece. There's just less to think about. I wouldn't say that I've got a spectacular body or anything, but in a race, I honestly don't care. And, if I go 2 piece, I prefer swimming in just the wet suit and sports bra, which then requires that I flash my pasty white belly fat in transition. Not really a spectacular sight.

Also, if you check out the sponsors page, you can find some great close out deals. I got my tri suit on closeout last year.

I just started using a 1-piece this summer and I love it. I am long in the torso and have a bit of a spare tire, but with the 1-piece I can lift my arms over my head (swimming) or lean over with my arms in front of me (biking) without fear of the top coming untucked.

In terms of looks, I have the Desoto power skinsuit that actually looks like a 2-piece from more than 3 feet away. Got it for about $55 new on ebay.

Wear whatever you've got, and wear it proudly!

Advantages of a 1-piece:  no inadvertent belly-flash, less likely to sunburn your lower back, only one piece of equipment to keep track of (but wow if you lose it).

Advantages of a 2-piece:  works over a wider proportion of bodies, easier to use the restroom.

Exactly. Good points. The restroom thing is something to consider, based on length of race, how often someone goes, etc.

Just an aside, the gentlemen in the picture the bear posted did finish IM Louisville. He is hardcore and a throwback to what Ironman is really all about!

Not if you're bling-Bling Man. Can you imagine the conversation with his wife at home, "You got beat by what??? You spent that much money and got beat by what???" Priceless photo!
