JWU42 - 2007-09-03 5:44 AM Just an aside, the gentlemen in the picture the bear posted did finish IM Louisville. He is hardcore and a throwback to what Ironman is really all about!

....so when exactly was it that Ironman was all about racing in cutoff jeans?

First of all, IMO cut-off man and retroman shows what this sport is all about. The engine is more important than the chassis or the paint job. You will do better with an expensive bike and may be more comfortable in the latest clothes, but you do not need them. People used to wear cotton when they worked out and somehow survived.

Of course, cut-off man and retroman are welcome to their wardrobes. Personally, I wear spandex tri-shorts and a bike jersey. I am thinking of getting a one-piece.

I see your point, but the reality is that the sport of triathlon has always been about new and better technology (to go along with the superior engine, of course).

  • I sincerely hope you are not as thick as you are presenting yourself...

Do you think the first several Ironman competitions were all geeked out guys in one piece spandex suits and aero helmets with $8,000 bikes?

For those who didn't "get it". Ironman isn't about wearing the "right" clothing and having the "right" bike, it is about yourself versus the enormity of the distance of the 3 disciplines and overcoming them. At least that is my $.02.

The guy above was called Ironman as he crossed the line just like everyone else. How many could have done it wearing cutoffs (no bike shorts) and a t shirt with a seemingly mediocre road bike (no bike shoes)?

Who is made of more "Iron"?

JWU42 - 2007-09-05 1:03 PM  I sincerely hope you are not as thick as you are presenting yourself...

    gosh, me too!

Do you think the first several Ironman competitions were all geeked out guys in one piece spandex suits and aero helmets with $8,000 bikes?

Well, I wasn't there, so pretty much all I know about triathlon (and IM) history is what I have read about online and in print. In fact, USAT magazine and triathlete magazine have had some retrospective articles about the history of triathlon in the last few months. In those articles it is repeatedly emphasized that triathletes have always been early adopters of technological advances (particularly in the arena of cycling, e.g. aero bars, disc wheels, clipless pedals, shield-style sunglasses, spandex, aero helmets, etc). In fact, check out the photo below from the early to mid 1980's to see some samples of clothing and equipment.

Now, if you know for a fact that "the early days of Ironman" were about folks showing up with banana-seat bikes and cutoff jeans, then please feel free to educate me. Everything I have seen indicates that triathletes in general have historically tended to be very cutting-edge in the clothing and equipment department.

The guy above was called Ironman as he crossed the line just like everyone else.

Agreed - I have no disrespect whatsoever for this gentleman or for retroman. I happily recognize them as Ironmen, and have never said any different. But I do not think they are representative of "the old days" of triathlon, either.

I prefer racing in a one piece. There's just less to think about. I wouldn't say that I've got a spectacular body or anything, but in a race, I honestly don't care. And, if I go 2 piece, I prefer swimming in just the wet suit and sports bra, which then requires that I flash my pasty white belly fat in transition. Not really a spectacular sight.

    DIDO!

I too wear a one piece. I have only competed in one tri (my second is in two weeks) There were definately more people in two pieces but to me it's the tug factor. While swimming you want something super tight but then biking and running I would be tugging on something that tight. So, I went with comfort over style. really everyone is going to be sweaty and ugly so apparel is just secondary. Think about what you are comfortable doing ALL THREE sports in.

I have competed in triathlons wearing cycling outfits the first season, a two-piece Javelin outfit and one-piece DeSoto outfit the 2nd season and one-piece Javelin outfits in my 3rd and 4th season.  My preference is for the one-piece outfits.  I am short of leg, long of torso and thick of waist.  The one-piece outfit feels better and the top does not ride up to my armpits, which is pretty iritating when one is racing.  I must admit that I do not worry all that much about what I look like because there will always some officious shmuck who thinks I look "funny" or "goofy" in whatever outfit I wear.  I can't please everybody so I migh just as well please myself by wearing something comfy, eh!
