Subject: Need Fast Help- Cassette Removal for Race Wheels
A friend just finished IMLP and is taking a break from cycling. So, I get his race wheels(Hed Deep) until he gets the desire to ride again.

I picked up the wheels tonight, and have a race on Monday. Problem is, I need to transfer my cassette fro my wheel to the race wheel. Problem is, cycling shops are closed on Sundays, and I want to use the wheels early Monday morning.

Without any special tools, is there anyway to remove and reapply a cassette? I need to get this done tonight or tomorrow morning. Thanks.

I found these online: I don't have some of the tools but you can get the idea. Looks like you need a couple of specific tools to get this done on your own.

You do need the special lockring removal tool and a chain whip (which is a length of chain attached to a rod), but the good news is that these are both inexpensive tools and it is common for cyclists to own them.

I would suggest you call around to some of your cycling friends - somebody will have one.

Good idea on calling around. Problem is, all of my cycling friends have been at a little get together and are in no shape to offer assistance.

I've been looking around online and as you've mentioned, it looks like I'll need special tools.

Edit: Just found a shop in town that's open on Sunday mornings. There may be hope yet!

Performance Bike in San Antonio will be open.  I assume their mechanics will be there.  Worth making a phone call before driving in.

If you cant change it out than ride withthe race front and the training rear the front is more importent anyway.

Great - hope you can find a shop open.

If not, and if you can get the tools, the job itself is very easy. Seriously, you unscrew the lock ring (using the chain whip to hold the cassette) and then the cassette will lift right off. Put the new cassette on and tighten the lock ring.

Here's the parktool reference:

I'm not a big fan of Performance(I go next door to Jim), but it's open at 10. I might be waiting outside when they open.

Scotto, I checked out the Park Tool site. Looks like I could handle it, but without the tools, there's not much I can do.

I've got the front wheel on. Better than nothing.

I seem to recall that you're doing the Austin tri. If you can't get it taken care of in the morning, PM me and we can exchange contact info. I'll bring my tools to bike check-in tomorrow evening if you need me to.

Edit: Btw, I'm assuming it's a Shimano cassette. I don't have a lockring tool for Campy.

I feel exactly the same, but sometimes Performance is more convenient....

Yeesh, please don't ride with the front race wheel and a training wheel in the back.  That's about the twitchiest setup you could possibly make, and if there's the slightest bit of wind, you're just hurting yourself trying to handle your bike.

You NEED a chain whip and a cassette tool. They are specific, and you cant take off and put on a cassette without them. Once you get em, the swap should take a total of about 5 mins.

The shop I took it to actually did not have a chain whip for sale. Fortunately, they made the switch for me for free in about 2 minutes.

Of course, now I can only use the race wheels until I can get the cassette switched back over.

I know there's a lot of Performance Bike hate out there, but they are advertising a lockring tool and chain whip for under $14 combined ($3.49 and $9.99). IMHO they are well worth the small investment. I pull my cassettes off to clean them pretty regularly even when I'm not swapping cassettes around.
