How much better are full Ultegra to Shamanio 105 parts?

I rode a bike at the LBS that I love, but the bike shop isn't giving me a a good price...above out price range.

Bike at LBS Parts:
Bontrager Race Crank
ESTi b/b
alloy stem(?) bontrager
Shamanio 105 f/d, r/d, cassette and brakeset

The bike online is the same type (softride) but an better older model 2001 that has full Ultegra and Mavic Open Pro wheels and is $550 less then the bikeshop price.

It seems to me that online is a much better deal. Have any of you had problems buying a bike online with service/warranty issues? If I buy it and need work done the LBS is the only softride dealer nearby...awkward?

What do you think?

Thanks,
Kathy

Well, you have to look at it this way... You are going to have to build/adjust the bike if you buy it online. If you can't do it yourself, you'll have to take it to the LBS and they will charge you an arm-and-a-leg because you didn't buy it through them. But, if you can do the work yourself, I'd get it online.

The only reason you would need to go to a SoftRide dealer is if something happens to the frame. If you just need adjustments, you can take it anywhere as a derailleur adjustment is a derailleur adjustment, doesn't matter what bike it is on.

I wouldn’t worry about a 105 front derailleur but I’d opt for the Ultegra stuff in the back if you have the option.

Personally, I’d buy the bike online!

Good luck,
Rob

Rob...good points.

In my search for a bike I have visited 4 LBS that work with triathletes. One I like the best, doesn't sell softride. They have been great to me. So if I ended up needing work they could do it instead of the softride dealer....I hadn't thought of that.

I just want to get a bike and be able to ride before it snows here in MA. My current bike is a to small hybrid. I like riding the best and I'm recovering from a shoulder issue, so I can't swim. I want to ride!!

I'm anxiously waiting to hear back again from the online place.

Thanks for the input!

Sounds to me like the online deal is too good to pass up.  You can always find a sympathetic friend in a local bike club who might be willing to help with bike adjustments if needed.  Not sure what shop you're going to in MA, but possibly you could find one different from the shop you are now dealing with for any adjustments you couldn't handle.  I can't imagine that a tuneup would be prohibitively expensive.

The main difference between 105 and Ultegra is the weight; Ultegra is lighter.  They are both excellent and reliable components systems.

The bike, which you are referring to, that you can get online for $550 less than the one at the bike is four years old (the 2005 models are out already).  It will have four seasons of use on it, so will definitely not be a new bike.  As has been mentioned already, if you buy online you will have to wet the bike up to your specifications and maybe change a few parts that are worn or damaged.  As for shopping online, the old axiom "let the buyer beware" applies most aptly, so be forwarned.

Got to disagree slightly with Mach here, the Ultegra adds a lot more precision in their shifting than the 105. Ultegra is engineered to the same specs as Dura Ace components, just utilizes different materials, so you could say "The main difference between Dura Ace and Ultegra is the weight."

Not to say that 105 isn't a decent level of componentry, certainly miles above Sora/Tiagra that you find on many entry-level bikes.

Will agree with him that the online bike is a used bike, you have no way of knowing with certainty how much or hard it was used over four years, and it won't have any kind of warranty as will a new bike.

Yesterday I started a thread called Why I support my LBS... that might provide you with some additional insights into the decision to "purchase online vs purchase locally"...

I'm not a bike mechanic, nor do I have the time to learn anything beyond basic maintenance and adjustments, so having a LBS I can depend on is very important to me.

The online bike is at a bike store and they haven't sold it....explained to me it has just been kicking around. Not sure why it would be not be considered new. I am waiting to hear back from them. I will ask more questions...one being what about the warranty and how much it has been ridden.

The LBS bought the beam/fork/frame from the Softride rep as it was a sample and it is a 2004. The person I worked with said they would put it together and it would be a great price. He told me well under $1500. They didn't order the parts as promised. It took them a week longer to get the bike put together. When I went to ride it they didn't know the price. They didn't get back to me after a couple of calls. Finally I went and rode it again and they told me it was $1800 with the discount. They reduced it to $1550 firm. The way they treated me...and repeatedly not getting back to me, really frustrated me and makes me wonder how they will be after the sale. Geez if someone is interested in buying a bike, I'd think they'd work quickly on it ang get back to you when they say.

I was surprised that the list price with the packaged component from Softride is $1895 plus I get 20% off which makes is just over $1500.
