Subject: Acupuncture?

Has anyone ever had acupuncture for any reason?  Do you feel it helped?  Also, I just have no idea who much a treatment runs.....what did you pay? (Just trying to get a ball park idea).

Thanks!

I tried it for a hand pain issue. Was at my wit's end with it until I went to a university hospital and got the surgery to remove thr 5mm tumor on the nerve which the other docs didn't think about.

Did it help? With my situation; no.
Cost: Insurance covered it believe it or not. Check up on it. I think rack rate was $60

I enjoyed it. It's cool to lie absolutely quiet and focus on your breathing. I was more relaxed than after a massage. The needles are NBD; zero to minimal pain (less than a mosquito bite). If you're a triathlete, you've experienced far worse pain! I went to a second therapist after the first one moved on me. Number 1 was much better than the second one. If she were available, I'd go back just from a wellness standpoint.

Oooo...thanks for sharing. That would be sweet if insurance covered it!!

I'm not afraid of the needles, I've given birth, so it was just the cost that I though might hurt! :-) I was also thinking even if the acupuncture itself didn't help, that it might be some sort of zen experience where I would walk away all relaxed, and since my issue is induced by stress, I would probably benefit from it no matter what.  So hearing how your experience went is reassuring!! Thanks!!!

I have had acupuncture for pain, It helped a lot. Look for an acupuncturist with 4 or more years of training. Some Chiros have an acupuncture certificate but I found that If they focus solely on accupuncture, they know more advanced techniques.
I found the cost anywhere from 75 to 100 per treatment. If you go often it could be as little as 50. It's better if you do not swim for 8 hours after a treatment. Check to see if they have a herbal and/or dietary guidelines with the acu. treatment for your condition.

JUST got back from my first treatment. It was cool.  She has me on some herbal stuff as well.  At this point I am willing to try anything!!  I told her I was not nervous, and she said Good! Because when people are nervous or doubting this treatment or have lots of questions in their head, their Chi is all stuck, and she can feel it when she pushed the needles in.  When we were all done I asked her if my Chi was good or if it resisted, and she said it was great! Couldn't believe it was my first time! Haha!  So I go back 2 more times next week. $55 a pop.

Thanks everyone for helping me take the plunge, or stick, or whatever.

Question, though.....why should you not swim for 8 hours?  Just wondering. Thanks!

Strained Hammy & I am less than 5 weeks out from a marathon. Has anyone used acupunture for such an injury? Did it last Tuesday. Tried to run 18 this past weekend - at the 13 mile marker I tightened up and packed it in. I have a 9 miler scheduled for Thursday & a 20 miler scheduled for the weekend. Help??? Any suggestions.

I'm a big fan of structural integration or myofascial release.

I'm a total believer in acupuncture.  I used it for nausea/vomiting in pregnancy.  It was $50 each visit, but totally worth the effect of being able to eat and keep it down!  My first pregnancy, I threw up until I delivered...so when it started all over with the 2nd one, I was freaked!  Nothing else worked except for acupuncture!

I haven't used it for athletic injuries, but I definitely would try it!

I've be doing acupuncture on a regular basis for about 6 months now. I started out going for relief from really horrible insomnia. Its helped with that and then other pain (back, hip) that has cropped up along the way. I will say its definitely been a journey though, one treatment really didn't do much. My acupuncturist asks you to sign up for 6 weekly treatments to get started.

I paid $115 for an initial evaluation and am now paying $70/visit.

I have been seeing an acupuncturist since July 06.  She's treated everything from my emotions to my cycle to ortho injuries.  She can do some amazing things with needles!  Definitely a believer here!  I think I have posted before how she actually moved my cycle up for me.  I didn't want it for something but it was due in like 3 days.  So, she used some needles and three hours later I had my period!  It was going SO fast that I ran out of tampons the next day at work...   I will remember this if my period is ever going to interfere with an A race!

In Rapid it's about $75/visit ($67.50 if I pay for a package of 12 upfront...that's about $810 but saves so much over the long haul that it's worth it).  It's pricey, but worth it.  She's practically become my counselor too and she spends a lot of time trying to help me.  So, it may be spendy, but I'm hooked!

In Denver I paid about $30.  So I guess it can range all over.

Hi there, I have had acupuncture for various conditions, shin splints, torn quad, skin complaints, hayfever and so on. It works for me and I much prefer the holistic approach than taking a load of meds. Generally acupuncture is on a case by case basis, some people may need prolonged treatment and some a short course - all depending on what the complaint is. My acupuncturist charges a flat rate for 6 sessions in one block and then per session after that. Some treatments worked better than others, but having had not luck with clinical medicine I am definitely in favour and will continue using acu for sports injuries and any medical problems I have. Good luck!

I have iliotibial band syndrome that is not allowing me to go longer distances than 4-5 miles without significant increasing pain.  I have signed up to see Integrative Therapies and hope they will offer accupuncture for this.   Has anyone used accupuncture for ITBS?

I tried it a number of times last year.  Insurance covered 50% of it.  I think I paid $25 per session.

I don't feel like it helped me much.  I'm not sure if my injury type/pain sources is one that is effectively treated by accupuncture.

A friend of mine is currently going and says its helped him tremendously.

Good luck.  Hope it works well for you.

Oh, and I'll add another vote for myofascial release.  That HAS been a major help for me.

LMAO...

I have not had Acupuncture but I practice a lot of Qi Gong which work on "straightening/unfolding" (for lack of a better explanation) your meridian lines. Your meridian lines being the lines where all your "points" that they put a needle in during acupuncture fall on. So same kind of process I guess..

Cheers.

Rice..

PS.. the results were/are amazing.

ITBS is why I originally went to accupuncture.  Turns out my knee was too far gone for anyone to fix short of surgery, but I really do believe that the acupuncture and massage kept me functional until I could talk the Air force into  LETTING me have surgery.

The Accupuncturist I went to zeroed right in on muscle deficiencies I had and used her accupuncture needles in conjunction with more typical PT stuff to try to fix my knee.

She did a bunch of other stuff too...bottom line...they have a huge variety of things they can work on.  If PT hasn't worked it is DEFINITELY worth a few needles before resorting to something more drastic like surgery.

I had good results with acupuncture for my lower back pain and tightness. The key is to find someone with a lot of experience and knowledge and stick with it for couple sessions.
