LeMars, Iowa
United States
YMCA
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 09m 12s
Overall Rank = 13/72
Age Group = 30-39
Age Group Rank = 5/21
Pre-race routine:

Light breakfast and a short bike to the tri site.
Event warmup:

After setting up transition, I stretched a bit. Declined to hop in the deep end of the pool for a swim warm up.
Swim
  • 05m 38s
  • 300 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

I beat my projected time of six minutes, and was within yards of catching the swimmer ahead of me by the end.
Transition 1
  • 02m 18s
Comments:

I pulled on a long sleeved shirt (it was cool this am) so it took me too long. The fact that I can't run without socks hurts me too.
Bike
  • 38m 24s
  • 11 miles
  • 17.19 mile/hr
Comments:

Rough bike. Very hilly course, with a headwind on the out 5.5 of the out and back course. My chain popped off twice, so I had to hop off and fix it both times. This cost me at least three minutes time. Frustrating.
What would you do differently?:

Inspect/service my bike better before a race.
Transition 2
  • 00m 28s
Comments:

My T2s are good because I wear my running shoes on the bike. All I have to do it rack the bike and take my helmet off.
Run
  • 22m 26s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

Stiff for the first mile, fair thereafter.
What would you do differently?:

I think if I train better for the bike I can preserve my legs to run more toward my 'usual' seven minute miles for this distance.
Post race
Warm down:

Slow bike ride back to my parent's home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Bike malfunction, limited recent training.

Event comments:

I had lots of fun. I'll be back next year, hopefully with friends in tow.

Maybe I need to plan a trip back home around this race. I grew up in Graettinger. You had a solid race. Good job.
