Westport, Connecticut

80F / 27C
Sunny
Total Time = 42m 21s
Overall Rank = 1/
Age Group = 25-29F
Age Group Rank = 1/
Pre-race routine:

check in, chatting with friends, setting up transition (no racks so this was different)
Event warmup:

5 min jog and 5 min bike
Swim
  • 11m 6s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 16s / 100 yards
Comments:

Women, children and relays started in the second wave. I didn't have anyone to swim with (next person was about 1:30 behind at finish). Results say a girl went 9 min but I was definitely first out of the water in my wave. Split time was slow compared to guys -but then again I had no one to swim with except the slow men who I passed.
Everyone had on orange caps which matched nicely with the orange sighting buoys. The first sight buoy was a ways from the start and I had to do breaststroke twice just to make sure I was headed in the right direction. I think I may have been tacking a bit...also swimming against the current which slowed the time a bit.
What would you do differently?:

not much
Transition 1
  • 00m 28s
Comments:

because bike was on ground, had to move the shoes around a bit in order to start pedaling. Once on the bike was able to quickly get shoes on and start cranking.
Note: transition time approx.
What would you do differently?:

not much. Still getting used to the whole shoes in bike thing...
Bike
  • 15m
  • 5.5 miles
  • 22.00 mile/hr
Comments:

short bike -but great way to practice transitions. Sprinted pretty much the entire way -cadence felt good and felt strong (especially after 45 miles yesterday!).
Bike split was about 2 min faster than in 05.
What would you do differently?:

not much
Transition 2
  • 00m 47s
Comments:

pretty good transition -much better jump off bike than the last race.
What would you do differently?:

not much
Run
  • 15m
  • 2.2 miles
  • 06m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

breathing was heavy (humid out again today) but not labored and wheezing like the last race. Felt nice and controlled pretty much the whole time. This was the first race where I passed more people than I got passed on the run :)
Was definitely waiting for the first female to pass, but with about 500 yards to go I was pretty sure I had it in the bag.

When I finished I did the whole arms raised celebration like the pros :)

The next female to finish was KN (about 1:20 back-she is really fast...and will likely kick my butt at westchester. Lucky for me we are not in the same AG).
Run must have been short...I don't think I was running this fast. Run was approx 1 min faster than in 05.

What would you do differently?:

not much
Post race
Warm down:

chat with friends.
Awards ceremony -My first cash win! 75 bucks to a local running shoe store and $250 gift certificate to Westport Y (I'm hoping New Canaan Y will reciprocate)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

a bike rack would have been nice

Event comments:

This is a little town race, so it's hard to rate against US Tri sanctioned events. For a local race that includes kids I think it's a lot of fun. I did not see any aid stations -but I didn't even bother with a drink on the bike since I knew the race was going to be less than 45 min. Might have been nice for those who took longer. Amino vital and water at end of race which was nice. I love this race because it's suited to swimmers.
Results were a bit screwed up at the end -had some 9 YO winning the women's race -hopefully they will get that sorted out when they post the results online.
