Total Time = 5h 58m 45s
Overall Rank = 29/90
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 4/17
Pre-race routine:

Standard pre-race breakfast (2 Ensure Plus, OJ, Clif bar, coffee). Drove out to the race and got set-up. Was plenty early, so just tried to sit and relax before the race start.
Event warmup:

Swam 400-500m. Mostly easy just to get the blood flowing.
Swim
  • 33m 1s
  • 1931 meters
  • 01m 43s / 100 meters
Comments:

Felt good on the swim and found some people my speed to draft off a few times (so didn't help me go faster, but I was able to ease up in sections without losing speed). We swam straight out from shore, then turned "up wind" on the lake resulting in some chop. But the diagonal back to the start was then down wind which made it faster and a bit nicer to finish that way.

In hindsight, it appears my HR was too high for the effort level though. It's quite possible that even though the water temp was OK, the hot & humid air was already dehydrating me. When I stood up to get out of the water, I felt more "drained" than usual. Especially considering how I felt while I was swimming.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe not wear the wetsuit.
Transition 1
  • 01m 5s
Comments:

Walked up the short hill out of the water and stepped to the side to get out of my wetsuit. Then barely jogged to my spot. Went smoothly for the most part but, again in hindsight, I think I was already "out of sorts".
What would you do differently?:

Maybe sit down and rest for a couple minutes and try to drink some fluids right then. Hadn't really hit me yet though.
Bike
  • 2h 56m 26s
  • 56.7 miles
  • 19.28 mile/hr
Comments:

Course starts with a steep climb out to the main roads. Knew my HR was really high (typical in T1 though), so made sure to take it easy on the way up. Once on the main loop, I began to try to settle into something a little below goal watts to allow my HR to come down. Began drinking too. However, after about 10-15min it was clear this was not going to work. My HR was still very high and, unlike most times when this happens, it actually seemed to jive with my breathing and RPE. So I tried to ease up a bit more, but my HR still only came down a few beats.

About 30min or so into the ride and I shut it down. I tried to ride very easy, get my HR down some and hope things might improve later in the ride. But my legs felt like they were working hard too. I was riding watts below LP and my legs felt tired. It was crazy.

I drank 6 bottles on the bike (nearly 128oz), but it still probably wasn't enough.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe slow down more or just pull over and rest for a few minutes. Not sure about this.
Transition 2
  • 01m 22s
Comments:

Took my time in T2. Had picked up an extra bottle on the way in (so #7 now) and stopped to drink some of it.
What would you do differently?:

Stop longer? Drink even more? Probably didn't matter by this stage.
Run
  • 2h 26m 50s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

Knew I was toast already, so I just set out at a jog hoping I could keep that up for awhile. But I started walking in the 3rd mile. There was plenty of walking the rest of the way, though I would try to jog whenever there was a downhill to at least take advantage of that. Finally worked a little harder toward the end when I realized I was going to be close enough to 6 hours that I should try to break it.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Could have pushed a little harder, but didn't really feel the need to prove anything to myself at that stage.
Post race
Warm down:

Headed into the lake to cool-down. Then got some food (didn't really feel like eating much, but wanted to get something in me) and drink (cold Coke was good) before driving home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heat, allergies/cold that hit me in the days before the race, poor training lead-in due to vacation, post-IM fatigue,...

Basically, I think it may have been a lot of little things that just compounded one another--with the heat & humidity probably being the topper. The net was that there was just no way I was going to perform to the level I had in my head on the day. Still wonder what things I could have done differently to get closer to that level though. Any suggestions?

Event comments:

Good course. Good organization. Good post-race goodies. Tough day. I'll be back at some point to try to get some revenge on this course.

Bummer about just not having it.  You may still not really be fully recovered from LP.  Plus you haven't been cranking out the training like you were pre-LP.

Good job on toughing it out and listening to your body and not pushing way beyond your limits (which is a recipe for a huge drop in performance).

Enjoy some rest and take the remainder of the year easy working on the base again.

Hey Johnny,

Outstanding job getting out there and finishing even when you were "out of sorts". I think that is quite common after a season including a big IM buildup! And the heat was terrible on Saturday!

BTW I laughed about your HR comment during the swim. Only because you rib me for knowing my HR when I swim. Told you so

I know.  I thought about you when I looked at the file later.

Not sure what I would have done if I had known in the water though.  Take off the wetsuit and drag it in with me?

Good point. Do you have a sleeveless wetsuit?

No.  Something I'll have to consider for the future though, thanks.

Nice race.  Finishing the HIM in those conditions is impressive.  Maybe next time we can meet up before exacting our revenge on that course.

Good job knowing when to not kill yourself. It sounds like it could have been any or all of those things that dragged you down. And as you have told me, Coke is the nectar of the gods.

They had cans of chicken broth at the aid stations on the run and all I could think about was why don't they have any COKE?!?!  Fortunately, it was waiting for us at the finish (ice cold too ).

Way to keep it together and finish the race. There are a number of ppl out there who would have taken the easy way out and DNF'd.

Definitely sounds like you had the perfect storm. I know when I did W-B 6 weeks after CDA I felt I was barely had enough time to recover and then prepare for an oly. I couldn't imagine doing a 1/2. Not to mentions the extreme conditions alone could easily tack on an additional 30min (or more) over the course of 70.3 miles.

And in the end, you still took 4th in your AG on an off day. Not too shabby!

Hey johnny,
I wound up volunteering at bike mile 16's aid station and I was hot just giving out water. Great job on a massive course with massive weather!!

Nice RR. I have spoke and read to several who did it and all feel pretty much the same. The Course is really tough and the heat was bad. I did IMLP too and have slacked off considerably since then. i was not at anywhere near peak fitness for this. i will be back next year just because I can't let this course beat me. I had a similar result at the Steelman here about a month ago.
Oh well better luck next time.

Nice job with pushing through the challenges and keeping your head in the game when the going got tough. Like everyone said, I think it was a combination of all those things you mentioned. I still learn something from you with every race you do....

Tough race. We'll all have one of those days at some time or another. Way to gut it out. At least it came with enough races under your belt that you can put it in perspective. Of course, on your bad day you finished 4th in your AG.

Nice work on a tough day. Not every race can be an assault on PR's. It was a tough day for a lot of guys. A good friend that I grew up with had her husband in the race. He finished LAST. 8 hours or something. I just recently spoke to him and even he found some positive out of his performance. That's what it's all about.
